Vermont reported 59 new positive tests on Wednesday. Windham County had four new cases. New Hampshire reported 12 deaths and 379 new positive tests statewide, Cheshire County reported 16 new cases. Massachusetts reported 55 deaths and 1,322 new cases of the virus statewide. Franklin County reported 5 new cases.
Three people were taken to the hospital after a two vehicle crash in Townshend on Wednesday. Vermont state police say cars operated by 39-year old Carmelo Torres of Brattleboro and 67 year old Johanna Thrower of Williamsville collided. Torres was traveling Southbound and proceeded to take a left-hand turn into a private driveway when he crossed the center line and struck Thrower’s vehicle head on. Both operators and the passenger in Thrower’s vehicle were taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Torres was issued a ticket for turning left and failing to yield to oncoming traffic.
A Guilford man will not serve additional jail time for his conviction on federal tax evasion charges. 63-year old Christopher Parker, 63, of Guilford, Vermont, was sentenced to time served, to be followed by three years of supervised release including 200 hours of community service. Prior to his sentencing, Parker had paid in full the roughly $281,000 in federal income taxes due and owing which he evaded through his conduct in this case. Parker is the sole proprietor of Christopher M. Parker LLC, a building restoration business based in Guilford.
Brattleboro’s chamber of commerce is surveying members about their support for retail cannabis shops in town. Last spring, the Vermont Legislature adopted Act 164 to create a process for the legalization of cannabis purchase and sale in Vermont. Early in 2021, a State Cannabis Control Board will be created. Rules will be adopted by March of 2022 and the State will start issuing licenses by October of 2022. Retail sales will be allowed only in municipalities that “opt-in” through a Town-wide vote. The question of opting-in will be included on Brattleboro’s March 2, Town Meeting Ballot.
The Vermont League of Cities and Town Board of Directors has appointed Edward M. (Ted) Brady as the League’s new executive director. Brady, who currently serves as Deputy Secretary of the Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community Development, will assume his new responsibilities in early April. VLCT President Miro Weinberger, Mayor of Burlington. “said Ted was selected because of his public management experience, his broad public policy knowledge, and his demonstrated ability to work with leaders across Vermont and in the state and federal governments to help improve our communities.
Vermont Governor Phil Scott is seeking applications for two openings on the State Board of Education. The Board is responsible for the establishment, advancement, and evaluation of public education policy. Board duties include making regulations governing attendance and records of attendance of all pupils, standards for student performance, adult basic education programs, approval of independent schools, disbursement of funds, and equal access for all Vermont students to a quality education. New members will be appointed by the Governor to a six-year term, beginning in March.
Governor Phil Scott signed a proclamation naming February 17, as Recovery Day in Vermont. Scott said highlighting this day also sends a message to those who are struggling that there is hope. To those who need support, please know that help and services are available, and there are many of us who care about you. Recovery is possible, and we want to do all we can to help you get there. Recovery Day is an annual celebration of the power of recovery, sponsored by the Vermont Association for Mental Health and Addiction Recovery and its partners.
