WTSA NEWS FOR MONDAY NOVEMBER 17th 2025

Federal funding for SNAP is back in Vermont and across the country – but the Green Mountain State’s top prosecutor is warning people to be careful of calls and messages they receive. According to Attorney General Charity Clark, scammers are trying to steal money needed for food assistance, and calling and texting recipients claiming their EBT card has been “locked.” The calls and texts ask for a call back to verify eligibility, but Clark says that government officials will never request this information over the phone, and to never give out their EBT card numbers. Anyone who encounters the scam is asked to hang up and call the Customer Assistance Program at (800) 649-2424.

Farmworkers and advocates with the Vermont-based organization Migrant Justice held rallies across Lamoille, Addison, and Chittenden counties, calling on Hannaford Supermarkets to join the Milk with Dignity program. Supporters say the move would help protect dairy workers who continue to report long hours, low pay, and unsafe living conditions. Milk with Dignity was created to establish basic labor standards in the Northeast dairy industry, including fair wages, paid time off, and access to safe, heated housing. Advocates say workers on farms outside the program often work 12- to 14-hour days without sick leave and, in some cases, live in homes without heat.

A man has been hospitalized after being shot by police following a pursuit in Charlestown, according to authorities. The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office reported that at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Friday, a Charlestown police officer attempted to stop a speeding vehicle without a license plate. The vehicle, driven by 23-year-old Christian Paquette on Claremont Road, failed to stop and accelerated, leading to a pursuit that reached speeds of around 90 mph. Eventually, Paquette abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. During the foot chase, the officer observed Paquette brandishing a knife, which he refused to drop as he approached the officer. In response, the officer discharged his weapon, resulting in Paquette being shot and subsequently transported to a local hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition. There were no other occupants in the vehicle, and the officer did not sustain any physical injuries. The incident was recorded by the officer’s body-worn camera, capturing the events leading up to, during, and following the shooting. Paquette has been charged by Charlestown police in relation to the chase and his actions towards the officer.

The Brattleboro Selectboard is continuing budget discussions with the mantra to “keep it as lean as possible,” aiming to save money and avoid large tax increases. Discussions include plans for a new solid waste services contract which could save the town over a million dollars in the next three years. The police and fire departments are scheduled to present their budgets at the upcoming meeting.
