WTSA NEWS FOR WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 12th 2025

A 20-year-old man from Charlemont tragically passed away on Thursday morning after the vehicle he was driving collided with a tree off Route 2 and subsequently caught fire, as reported by the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office. Melissa Sippel, a spokesperson for the DA’s office, confirmed on Monday that Darek Harvey was the only occupant of the vehicle at the time of the crash, which occurred around 4:45 a.m. She noted that the vehicle ignited shortly after hitting a tree on Burrington Road. The incident is currently under investigation. In memory of Harvey, two hockey sticks were arranged in an “X” shape at the tree where the crash occurred, honoring his love for hockey and his previous role as a goalkeeper on the Brattleboro boys’ varsity hockey team. Additionally, a Go Fund Me page has been established by Darek’s family, accessible via the link on WTSA radio dot com under the Go Fund Me tab.

U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vermont) yesterday released the following statement after voting against a continuing resolution that fails to extend urgently needed health care tax credits: “I cannot vote for a government funding bill that kicks millions of Americans off their health care. The heart of this government shutdown is, and always was, about access to health care. There was an early recognition from my Republican colleagues that working families, small businesses, and farmers in their states would be really hurt by these premium increases—just as they will be in Democratic states, too. That’s why it is so disappointing that Republicans refused to come to the table to extend the Affordable Care Act’s premium tax credits. Millions of hardworking people, in every state, will face higher premiums and many will go without health coverage altogether.”

The Vermont Department of Health announced last week that COVID-19 hospitalizations have decreased once more following a rise in cases that started in August and continued into early fall. Other metrics, such as wastewater virus levels and outbreaks, have also shown a decline. The VDH and CDC are no longer providing updates on COVID fatalities or total cases in Vermont or the United States. Wastewater SCAN testing of treatment facilities reveals that both COVID-19 and Norovirus levels in Vermont are moderate to low, although they have recently been higher in the state compared to national levels.

The general public will have the opportunity to ski on the mountain starting the next day.
