WTSA NEWS FOR MONDAY NOVEMBER 10th 2025

Brattleboro Community Group is Working to Open an Overnight Winter Shelter. And as winter approaches, a new community-led initiative in Brattleboro is working to ensure a warm and welcoming overnight shelter is available for anyone in need at the Beloved Community Church, 18 Town Crier Drive, Brattleboro. Initial setup costs, as well as staffing and operating costs for 20 of the coldest nights, are covered by the State of Vermont’s Extreme Cold Weather Shelter Program (ECWSP). The group is actively seeking additional funding and community support to ensure the shelter can remain open every night throughout the entire winter season, not just the state-funded cold weather nights. This initiative is a community response to the ongoing challenge of homelessness in the area, which has been exacerbated by changes in the state’s motel voucher program. This effort is separate from Groundworks Collaborative’s main shelter operations, which have also been working on long-term expansion plans at a new location on Frost Street.

Significant changes to the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), effective November 1st, are expanding work requirements and tightening eligibility for many vulnerable residents.Enacted under the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” the new rules raise the age for mandatory work requirements for Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWDs) from 54 to 64. They also eliminate previous exemptions for veterans, individuals experiencing homelessness, and young adults transitioning from foster care, forcing these groups to meet strict 80-hour monthly work or training criteria to maintain benefits.

These changes are expected to affect up to 1 million people nationwide. In Massachusetts, local food security advocates and organizations like the Stone Soup Cafe are preparing for increased demand as thousands in the region face potential benefit reductions or loss of aid.

The expanded rules also introduce stricter criteria for non-citizens and alter how utility allowances are calculated, a move that could further reduce monthly benefit amounts for some households. Advocacy groups are actively working to inform residents of the new requirements while calling for systemic changes to combat rising food insecurity.

Three-Alarm Fire in Amherst Displaces Residents: A three-alarm fire in the nearby town of Amherst Massachusetts caused an apartment building to collapse, displacing 223 residents. Fire departments from the broader Franklin County area responded to the incident.
