Vermont SNAP recipients who did not receive the state’s supplemental benefits Saturday should expect payments by November 7th, according to state officials. The state has approved a temporary, state-funded contingency benefit to ensure Vermonters maintain access to food during the ongoing federal government shutdown. State officials say the money for 15 days worth of benefits will be issued on or before November 7, meaning recipients who did not see the money Saturday will still receive their payments. The Vermont Foodbank received $250,000 for local food shelves to ensure residents have access to food if payments are delayed. Recipients with questions can call 2-1-1 for assistance.
Shortly after 11 p.m. on Halloween night, the West Dummerston Fire Department was called to a fully involved RV fire on Middle Road. Upon their arrival, Captain Trevor Houle confirmed the information that had been dispatched, observing a small brush fire, and requested a tanker, which led to a call to Putney Fire for their tanker. The personnel successfully extinguished the fire, and once the situation was under control, they repacked 2000 feet of hose and handed over the scene to Brattleboro Towing and Recovery, along with Vermont State Police. No injuries were reported. The units returned to service at 2:21 a.m.
For the first time since 2023, health insurance premiums for Vermont teachers won’t rise by double digits. The Vermont Education Health Initiative, a self-insured trust that manages health benefits for about 33,000 school employees and their families, announced proposed premium hikes this month that will average 7.3% next year. In a filing memo, VEHI officials wrote that “bold intervention” from state lawmakers and regulators significantly cut costs and helped prevent premiums from spiking between 15% and 20%. The Green Mountain Care Board, which sets hospital budgets in Vermont, acted aggressively this year, reducing the revenue plan for the state’s largest hospital by $88 million.
Multiple vehicles were involved in a serious motor vehicle crash on Route 10 in Swanzey Saturday afternoon. The crash was reported shortly before 4:15 p.m. Saturday between Whittamore Farm Road and Sawyers Crossing Road and witnesses report it was a head on collision involving multiple vehicles. A landing zone was set up at the Dillant Hopkins Airport for an unknown number of patients to be airlifted for medical treatment. Several ambulances responded to the scene as well.
Vermont is seeking a new developer to build a 15-bed locked facility for youth involved in the criminal justice system. The request for proposal comes a few months after the Department for Children and Families dropped its plans to build the facility in Vergennes. The RFP, issued Oct. 17, puts the responsibility for finding a location, as well as securing any local permits or zoning changes, on the developer. Vermont hasn’t had a permanent facility for justice-involved youth since closing Woodside Juvenile Rehabilitation Center in 2020 amid allegations that staff used excessive force against kids. The state has struggled to replace Woodside, encountering local push back in Vergennes and, before that, in Newbury, where it first attempted to build a six-bed facility.
