WTSA NEWS FOR MONDAY SEPTEMBER 15th 2025

On Friday, shortly after 4pm, the Vermont State Police were informed by the Massachusetts State Police Shelburne Barracks about a vehicle that nearly hit a Massachusetts State Trooper and proceeded into Vermont without stopping during a traffic stop attempt. The vehicle was reported to be traveling north on Interstate 91 in Guilford. Troopers from the Westminster barracks responded to locate the vehicle, which was later discovered abandoned at a gas station in Rockingham. The driver, David A. McAllister, was found on US Route 5 in Bellows Falls, prompting an investigation by the Vermont State Police. Following the investigation, McAllister was arrested for DUI, violation of conditions of release, criminal DLS, and providing false information to law enforcement. He was taken to the Vermont State Police Barracks in Westminster for processing, issued a criminal citation, and is scheduled to appear today (Mon.) in Vermont Superior Court, Windham Criminal Division, to address the charges.

A city councilor in Keene is facing increasing pressure to resign following inflammatory comments he made on Facebook regarding the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. By Saturday morning, over 140 individuals had signed an online petition calling for the removal of Ward 2 Councilor Bobby Williams. The petition claims that Williams mocked Kirk’s death and indicates that his comments reflect a “serious lapse in judgment” that erodes public trust in the City Council. Williams, whose term extends through 2027, has yet to provide a public response to the petition or to Kahn’s statement.

As apple season begins in Vermont, many orchards report the impact of a very wet spring followed by drought. Dean Miller of Cortland Hill Orchard in Brattleboro states that his fruit is full and healthy, yet he only harvested about 50% of his usual crop — the lowest in his over 60 years of farming there. “Every day in May, except for a few, it rained, which coincided with our blossoms emerging,” he explained. “Consequently, the bees were unable to pollinate the blossoms.” Miller also notes that the rain negatively affected his plum crop. By mid-September, approximately two-thirds of Vermont was facing severe drought, particularly in Addison and Rutland counties, as well as central Vermont and the eastern region of the state. The U.S. Drought Monitor indicates that such dryness typically reduces fruit yields and size while depleting irrigation ponds and groundwater.

Nighttime single-lane closures will be in place Monday night through Saturday morning from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Work will continue on Vermont Route 9 (Western Avenue and High Street), U.S. Route 5 (Canal Street and Main Street), Vermont Route 30 (Linden Street) and Vermont Route 142 (Vernon Street). Flaggers will be present to direct one-way alternating traffic through multiple work zones. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces. All motorists should be aware of raised utility structures and wet paint.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit has prevented over 1.1 million patients from utilizing their Medicaid insurance at Planned Parenthood health centers across the country, affecting more than 8,000 patients in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. This decision aligns with the Trump administration’s stance and threatens the viability of approximately 200 Planned Parenthood health centers. The ruling disallows Planned Parenthood from receiving compensation for services rendered to Medicaid patients. Nevertheless, Planned Parenthood of Northern New England (PPNNE) persists in providing care to Medicaid patients at their facilities.
