A man recognized as a leader in Vermont’s education for children with disabilities has been arrested for felony embezzlement. According to Montpelier police, Darren McIntyre, the former executive director of the Vermont Council of Special Education Administration (VCSEA), is accused of embezzling over $75,000 from the organization during his tenure from 2021 to 2023. The investigation into McIntyre commenced in October 2024 when the organization reported that he had misused VCSEA funds for personal benefit. McIntyre has received a citation and is scheduled to appear in court in September.

A rise in violent crime is leading to more delays in justice in Vermont courtrooms. The number of homicides in Vermont has increased in recent years to levels not seen since the early ’90s. When comparing 10-year Vermont homicide averages, the state averaged 11 per year from 2001 to 2010. That increased in the next decade to 12. But in the last five years alone, the state has averaged 22 per year. The multitude of cases is piled on top of thousands of nonviolent misdemeanor cases. Chittenden County State’s Attorney Sarah George says it takes prosecutors much longer to go through the homicides. “There are usually 50-100 depositions that need to be conducted. there are motions that get litigated that take a lot of time and sometimes expert testimony – and then the trials themselves can be long and complicated,” she said.

A woman from New Hampshire was arrested for allegedly abandoning a cat on the roadside in Marlboro, Vermont. According to state police, they were alerted by a concerned citizen who witnessed the incident at a pull-off on Route 9 around 12:33 p.m. last Saturday. Upon arrival, troopers found the cat left in an enclosed crate without access to food or water. Following their investigation, police arrested 58-year-old Leonora M. Thomas of Northfield, N.H., on a charge of animal cruelty. The cat has since been taken into the care of the Windham County Humane Society. Thomas received a citation to appear in Vermont Superior Court on October 28.

Vermont’s weekly unemployment claims for the week ending August 30, 2025, reached their lowest point this year following a surge in manufacturing layoffs in July. Last week, new claims totaled 189, a decrease of 72 from the previous week and 32 fewer than the same period last year. Typically, claims are at their lowest during the summer, with 181 reported at the end of September 2024. In the weekly report for Vermont, manufacturing represented 16% of the total claims, a decline of 5 points from the prior week. Over the past 25 years, manufacturing has diminished as a component of the Vermont economy, and this trend seems to persist. The service industry, which generally generates the highest number of claims, reported 50% last week, an increase of 4 points from the previous week. Construction claims accounted for 10%, rising by 3 points. For the week, Vermont’s total unemployment insurance claims stood at 2,559, reflecting a decrease of 287 from the week prior and an increase of 182 compared to the same time last year.
