A Vermont police officer who confessed to striking and killing a bicyclist will not face any jail time. As part of a plea deal, Shelburne Police Sgt. Kyle Kapitanski pleaded guilty to the South Burlington incident that resulted in the death of Sean Hayes, 38, last November. According to the agreement, Kapitanski will be on probation for two years. Traffic resource prosecutors from the Vermont Department of State’s Attorneys and Sheriffs handled the case. They assert that Kapitanski was speeding and watching a YouTube video on his in-cruiser tablet at the time of the incident. However, Kapitanski’s attorney claims there is no evidence to support this. The state believes that, given the available evidence, securing a conviction might have been challenging, but they feel that the plea agreement provides a sense of justice. The victim’s family is pursuing a civil lawsuit against the town of Shelburne, where Kapitanski is employed.
A Vermont man has been arrested on drug dealing charges. According to Vermont State Police, Shane Farrell, 55, from Brattleboro, was allegedly selling fentanyl and cocaine from a residence on Garfield Drive in Brattleboro. Investigators report that Vermont’s Drug Task Force utilized confidential informants to make six purchases from Farrell over several months. Farrell was apprehended on Wednesday and is currently held at the Southern State Correctional Facility with a bail set at $50,000.
A Rhode Island man charged with the 2023 strangling death of a Vermont woman will be assigned a new attorney. Shawn Conlon entered a not guilty plea last year regarding the murder of 73-year-old Claudia Voight. Initially, it was thought that Voight passed away from natural causes. However, an autopsy later determined that she had been strangled. At the time of her death, Conlon was residing in Voight’s home in Windham. Although the case has been pending in the court system for almost two years, Conlon has now sought a new lawyer, which may further postpone the proceedings.
Vermont’s lawsuit against the tech giant Meta is allowed to proceed, as per a recent ruling from the Vermont Supreme Court. The Vermont Attorney General’s Office asserts that Instagram, Facebook, and other applications owned by Meta adversely affect the mental health of young individuals in Vermont. In June, Meta contended in court that the state’s lawsuit should be dismissed due to its lack of presence in the state and the absence of a significant connection between their claims and Meta’s operations here. However, in a ruling issued on Friday, the Vermont Supreme Court upheld a lower court’s decision that rejected Meta’s motion to dismiss the case.
Vermont transportation officials announced on Thursday that the Trump administration has allocated $15.8 million for electric vehicle fast-charging infrastructure in the state. In January, federal officials had frozen over $21 million in promised funding from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program. A federal judge in June overturned the Trump administration’s decision but determined that three states, including Vermont, did not provide sufficient evidence of harm. State transportation officials report that the funds were released last month following the resubmission of plans.
