Kate Grodin, co-principal of Winooski Middle and High School, characterizes the high school cafeteria as quiet, in contrast to the lively middle school cafeteria. She attributes this difference partly to the policy that restricts cellphone use for grades six to eight, while students in grades nine to twelve are permitted to use cellphones during lunch or study periods. However, this will change this year. Winooski, along with many other school districts in the state, has implemented a district-wide policy prohibiting the use of cellphones or personal devices, commonly referred to as a ‘bell-to-bell’ ban, for all grades. This change is in response to the enactment of Act 72, which mandates Vermont schools to establish policies by the 2026-27 school year that prevent students from using cellphones and other personal devices, such as smartwatches, from arrival to dismissal. This law aligns Vermont with 25 other states that restrict or ban smartphone usage in schools.
On Tuesday, August 26, 2025, rescue teams assisted a hiker on Mt. Washington who was experiencing an unknown medical issue. At around 4:30 p.m., the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Conservation Officers were alerted that Tyler Viruet, 29, from Carver, Massachusetts, was suffering from various symptoms that left him immobile. The Mt. Washington State Park staff were informed of the situation and requested to help establish contact with Viruet. At that time, temperatures were around 40ºF, worsened by light rain driven by the wind. State Park personnel prepared with additional clothing and medical supplies and began their hike to the patient shortly after 5:30 p.m. Upon reaching the base of the mountain, Viruet was evaluated by Gorham Ambulance personnel. He ultimately opted to be transported to the hospital in a personal vehicle after his assessment. Hikers are reminded that weather in the White Mountains is changing rapidly. Wind chills are already below freezing in areas above the tree line, and ice and snow will soon follow. Outdoor enthusiasts are advised to prepare for winter conditions and adjust their plans as weather conditions require.
A 23-year-old man from Weathersfield was arraigned on Tuesday in Windham Superior Court, Criminal Division, facing charges of threatening a Dover individual with a weapon and assaulting a Massachusetts state trooper with his vehicle. On August 19 at 5 p.m., the Dover Police Department responded to a report of a domestic assault involving a weapon. Later, around 10 p.m., Mason L. Payne, 23, was stopped by a Massachusetts State Trooper on Interstate 91 in Holyoke after an alert was issued. During the stop, Payne allegedly dragged the trooper several feet with his car before fleeing, prompting the pursuit to be terminated for safety reasons. He was apprehended later that night in Stamford, Connecticut, and extradited to Vermont on Monday. Payne faces charges of aggravated assault with a weapon, aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment. He was ordered to be held without bail during his arraignment.
To enhance data collection and effectively manage New Hampshire’s furbearer species, hunters are now mandated to register furbearers harvested through hunting via an online registration report. The furbearers that have a designated hunting season include coyote, fisher, raccoon, red fox, gray fox, opossum, mink, weasel, skunk, and muskrat. Registration is now necessary solely for furbearers obtained through hunting and excludes animals captured by trapping, Wildlife Control Operators, or any other methods. Additionally, all harvested fisher must be sealed, and the lower jaw must be submitted at the time of sealing. The hunting seasons for furbearers in New Hampshire commence on September 1 for red and gray fox, opossum, skunk, and raccoon, while the seasons for mink, muskrat, and weasel begin on October 15 or November 1, depending on the Wildlife Management Unit. The hunting season for fisher starts on December 1. Coyotes can be hunted throughout the year.
