Vermont state police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Springfield
that left one man dead. It happened around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday between
Common Street and Elm Terrace. Troopers say the Springfield Police
Department and Windsor County Sheriff’s Office were at the scene when the
shooting happened. But they did not release specific details about the incident.
The man who was shot died at the scene. Police have not yet released his
identity. No law enforcement members were injured. Investigators will release
the names of the officers who were involved after 24 hours. State police are
investigating. When they’re done, they will turn over the case to the Vermont
Attorney General’s Office and the State’s Attorney’s Office to review the police
use of deadly force. Anyone with information is asked to call the barracks in

Three people have been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting in Hartford
on Thursday, and police have now released the names of the victims. The early
morning incident on Verna Court left one person dead and another injured.
Police say David Labrecque, 65, of Canaan, New Hampshire, died at the scene.
Jessica Lemay, 36, of Canaan, New Hampshire, was hospitalized with multiple
gunshot wounds. She is expected to be OK. Three people are now in jail and
charged in connection with the case. Demetrius Drew, 30, of New Haven,
Connecticut, faces charges of first-degree murder, attempted second-degree
murder and aggravated assault. Drew has previously faced federal gun charges.
Jeffrey Mullins, 46, and Michelle Mullins, 48, both of Ringe, New Hampshire, are
charged as accessories. All three were held without bail and were due in court
today.
Last Friday, the Brattleboro Police Department was contacted by the State of
Vermont Sex Offender Registry in reference to John Oja who was believed to be
non- compliant with registry requirements. After an investigation it was found
Oja had failed to report his physical residence as required by the registry. On
Thursday, Oja was located at a tent site in the town of Brattleboro, and he was
arrested for the offense. Oja was taken into custody and released on conditions.
He appeared in Windham Superior court, criminal Division earlier today.
Nearly 90% of Vermonters surveyed believe the Trump administration should
release the documents from the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, according to
a new survey. The study, from The University of New Hampshire Survey Center,
encompassed responses from 832 Vermonters and was conducted in mid-
August by the University. It included poll questions that show that a majority of
respondents also believe President Trump and former President Bill Clinton are
either definitely or probably guilty of crimes related to the Epstein case. Some
of the highlights in the report include data that 89% of Vermonters said they
believe the government should definitely or probably release all documents on
the Epstein case.
The Next Stage Arts search for a new executive director has come to a happy
ending, with the recent hiring of Natalie Dreyer, who brings a decade’s worth of
experience to the position, having led multiple arts initiatives that have focused
on collaboration, access, and creativity. Dreyer also comes to Next Stage with
deep ties to the Putney community and will begin her tenure in September.
