In light of the prevailing weather conditions and heightened wildfire risk, a burn ban is now enforced in the Town of Brattleboro until further notice. The region is facing extremely high fire danger levels, where even a minor spark could trigger a hazardous wildfire.
Effective immediately, all outdoor burning is banned, which includes:
- Brush piles • Campfires and Burn barrels
This measure is essential to safeguard our community, natural resources, and emergency responders.
Some $68 million in funding for flood resilience projects is coming to Vermont. State leaders recently announced the latest round of federal community development block grants. The money is slated to help towns slammed by the 2023 floods build back stronger. The bulk of the funding will go to Lamoille and Washington counties, and be earmarked for infrastructure, housing and planning. The announcement of the grants comes as Vermont considers how broad changes to FEMA may affect future flood recovery efforts.
On Sunday, at 3:15pm, Troopers from the Vermont State Police – Westminster Barracks responded to a motor vehicle crash on Upper Dover Rd in the Town of Marlboro. Investigation of the incident resulted in the arrest of 43-year-old Jonathan Matyas for DUI Drugs. Matyas is scheduled to appear in Vermont Superior Court – Windham Criminal Division on October 21st.
Police released the identity of the person killed in a severe head-on collision in Hartland on Saturday. State police say it happened on Route 12 near Cobb Hill Rd. Just after 1 p.m. Troopers say a southbound Toyota Rav 4, driven by Jamison O’Neil, 35, of Hartland, collided head-on with a northbound pickup truck. O’Neil was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck, Joseph Petrone, 77, of Connecticut, and his passenger were taken to the hospital in serious condition. Police are still investigating the cause of the crash. New Hampshire Corrections officials are seeking public assistance in locating a missing inmate. David Hamilton, a minimum-security inmate at the Transitional Work Center in Concord, escaped on Saturday night. Officials report that Hamilton was last seen at Calvary Cemetery around 9:45 p.m. entering a full-size black pickup truck, which has a cap and aftermarket exhaust. He is described as a 27-year-old white male, approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall, with brown eyes, a shaved head, a beard, and tattoos on his face and arms. Hamilton was incarcerated for second-degree assault, with a scheduled release no earlier than 2027. Anyone with information regarding Hamilton’s location is urged to contact the NHDOC Investigations Bureau at 603-848-2569 or reach out to local law enforcement.
Vermont Community Broadband Board (VCBB) has completed taking in applications for Vermont’s Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (VT-BEAD) Program. BEAD is a federal program that provides $42.45 billion to expand high-speed internet access by funding planning, infrastructure deployment, and adoption programs in all states and territories. Vermont’s allocation of those funds is almost $229 million. Federal changes to the program in June required states to complete an additional application round, which has recently ended.
