Vermont Governor Phil Scott and members of his cabinet will be in Windham County on Tuesday, August 12 for the Capital for a Day 14-county tour. Governor Scott first launched this initiative in June 2018, and he and his cabinet visited all 14 counties over the following 10 months. Capital for a Day gives local constituents, municipal government leaders and other partners the opportunity to connect directly with state leadership and staff.

Scott says when  there is clear evidence of harm to Vermonters, the Scott Administration will continue to push back against such decisions and requests. Despite all the political drama on this issue, this is not one of those moments.  Again, the facts matter. And the facts here are clear: everything we have provided to the federal government is within the limits of long-established law.

School for International Training president, Sophia Howlett, will step down at the end of the year after nine years of service to the U.S.-accredited global university. Carol Jenkins, CEO of the school’s parent organization, World Learning, will become acting president of the Brattleboro institution while continuing in her current role. Howlett’s tenure at SIT notably included the launch of SIT Graduate Institute’s new global master’s degree format in 2018. She has also spearheaded the development of multiple new master’s degree programs and the launch of three new doctoral degrees, in global education, sustainability and international relations.

 
Fidium is expanding its all-fiber internet network to St. Johnsbury, and parts of Windham County. Fiber infrastructure construction is scheduled to begin as soon as August 15 with exact start dates varying by location. Fidium is  expanding in Halifax and Whitingham, bringing high speed internet to more than 1,600 homes and businesses. 

Today, more than 143,000 Vermont homes and businesses have access to Fidium, including Brattleboro, Dummerston, Guilford, Marlboro and Wardsboro, with more connectivity coming soon for more locations across the state.

The Vermont Covered Bridge Society is holding a special  event at the Creamery Covered Bridge during Covered Bridge Week. Tonight from 6 to 8 p.m., visit the bridge at 500 Western Avenue for a chance to view “Covered Bridges of Southern Windham County, Vermont,” a 30-minute film by Phillip Gatenby, which will be shown on a continuous loop. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs to comfortably enjoy the screening. As a special treat, free ice cream will be provided, which was donated by the Brattleboro Parks & Recreation Department and the Brattleboro Elks Club, and served by the Brattleboro Garden Club.

Outfielder Roman Anthony and the Boston Red Sox finalized an eight-year extension. It begins with the 2026 season and runs through 2033 with a club option for 2034. The contract is expected to be worth $130 million and includes escalators that could bring the overall value up to $230 million.
