WTSA NEWS FOR MONDAY AUGUST 4th 2025

Expect more smoky air driven by Canadian wildfires today
The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services is expecting concentrations of fine particle air pollution to reach unhealthy levels for sensitive individuals Statewide for Monday August 4. NHDES officials are calling for an Air Quality Action Day and advise sensitive individuals to take precautions to protect their health by limiting prolonged outdoor exertion.
The Vermont air quality division says we can  expect air quality to occur in the ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’  range in Northern Vermont, and to average in the moderate range in southern Vermont. Please note that in southern Vermont levels of fine particulate matter may occur in the USG range on an hourly basis. Wildfire smoke from Canadian fires prompted a weather advisory on Sunday.

The Brattleboro Police Department plans another community connection night this week.  The FREE, family-friendly event is planned for Wednesday, August 6, 2025, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Harmony Lot and along Elliot Street.

The event will feature

  • Free food (served by the Brattleboro Fire Department)
  • Free ice cream for all kids in attendance
  • Free kids’ T-shirts (T-shirts available for the first 250 kids in attendance)
  • Touch-a-truck
  • Several bounce houses
  • Dunk tank (where you can dunk your favorite police officer)

Elliot Street, from the corner of Main Street to the Transportation Center, will be closed to traffic from approximately 3 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 6. Drivers will be able to access and park at the Transportation Center during that time.

Expect more paving during the night time hours this week around downtown Brattleboro .  Crews are continuing to work on adjusting utility structures in the roadway throughout areas that have been milled and paved. Milling and paving operations will continue on Monday night. Paving mainline of VT 9 (High Street) toward downtown is scheduled for Monday and milling of VT 30 (Linden Street) is anticipated to begin on Tuesday. They will start near the retreat and move toward the center of town. Clean up and surface preparation of the scarified road surface (where they cut out and fill pot holes) is planned for Thursday night.  Friday, August 8th, crews plan to complete paving any side roads on VT 9 and conduct layout for paving on U.S. 5 and VT 30.

The comment period is now OPEN for submitting comments on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission . This is the last major step in the 13-year hydropower relicensing process to grant new licenses for the Wilder, Bellows Falls, and Vernon dams operated by Great River Hydro. The new licenses will be in place for 30-50 years.  The Connecticut River Conservancy is encouraging the public to participate in this process by submitting comments to FERC online by the August 28th deadline.
The advocacy group will also hold a virtual info session on  Tuesday, August 5th at 6pm

A  New Hampshire man who was previously denied re-entry into the United States from Canada has officially returned home.
Shaheen and Gordon, who is representing 46 year old  Chris Landry of Peterborough, said he returned home this week after a court vacated prior marijuana-related convictions.
Landry was convicted of the drug-related offenses and received two 60-day jail sentences that were suspended. He was held for questioning and sent back to Canada on July 6, apparently because of  several misdemeanor offenses from about 20 years ago.
