Vermont school districts are now prepared to commence the academic year with the assurance that they possess the necessary resources to fill essential roles,” stated the state’s education secretary, Zoie Saunders, in a formal announcement. On Friday, the Trump administration declared the disbursement of the remaining $18 million in federal education funding allocated for Vermont’s Agency of Education and the local school districts within the state. In a press release issued on Friday, Vermont Education Secretary Zoie Saunders indicated that the agency will initiate its standard procedure for allocating the funds to school districts starting on Monday. This announcement from the U.S. Department of Education follows less than a month after the agency revealed it was withholding over $6 billion in funding for six federal grant programs across the nation.

 

Authorities report that a woman from Vermont, who had been reported missing, was discovered deceased on Monday. On Sunday, law enforcement officials requested assistance from the public in locating Sheila Uris, 82, from Waitsfield, who had departed from her residence on Saturday and failed to return. On Monday afternoon, police announced that a homeowner in Waitsfield found a vehicle on their premises, with Uris deceased inside. At this time, officials are uncertain about the cause of her death; however, they do not consider it to be suspicious.

 

Police have stated that a death in Brandon is no longer deemed suspicious, and they have disclosed the identity of the deceased woman. On Monday, law enforcement officials identified the woman discovered deceased at a residence on Carver Street as Mary Coombs, aged 53, from Brandon. Initially, on Monday, police had classified her death as suspicious. However, investigators have indicated that while the cause and manner of her death remain under investigation, they are no longer categorizing her death as suspicious.

 

Vermont authorities report that a man has died following a collision in Wells. According to troopers, the incident occurred on Sunday around 3:30 p.m. on Route 30, when a pickup truck struck a motorcyclist while attempting to turn onto the roadway. Investigators indicate that the motorcyclist, Ricky Chandler, aged 40, from Granville, New York, was transported to the hospital, where he subsequently succumbed to his injuries. The pickup truck driver has not yet been charged in connection with the crash; however, police state that they are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

 

On Friday, shortly before 1pm, the Vermont State Police-Westminster Barracks were called to the Magic View Motel located in the town of Londonderry, due to a reported ongoing assault. A subsequent investigation uncovered that Randall Leach (45) had perpetrated the crimes of Larceny from a Person, Assault and Robbery, as well as Simple Assault. Leach received a flash citation and was scheduled to appear in Vermont Superior Court, Windham Criminal Division on Tuesday. Randall was detained at Southern State Correctional Facility and held on a bail amount of $2,000.

 

Students from Brattleboro Union High School are preparing to operate a store and catering service from the commercial kitchen located at the Winston Prouty Center for Child and Family Development. The Daily Bear at CAVE Kitchen derives its name from the BUHS mascot, with CAVE representing Culinary, Agricultural, Vocational Education. The objective is to commence operations by the start of September. Students are in the process of preparing the space. They have been engaged in cleaning, painting, testing recipes, organizing the store, obtaining licenses, developing menus, and communicating with distributors and suppliers.
