Severe flooding struck parts of the Northeast Kingdom on Thursday, marking the third consecutive year on the same date. Bridges and roads in Lyndonville and Sutton sustained damage, while homes were overwhelmed with water. The sound of rushing water has become all too familiar for Vermonters, as rivers overflow their banks. On Thursday morning, the National Weather Service warned authorities that severe flooding was increasingly likely. Crews from Lyndonville, Sutton, and Stowe were dispatched around 3:00 p.m. Lyndonville was still in the process of repairing damage from last year’s floods. Crews worked diligently to repair the damage as the floods continued to rise, leaving many roads and bridges closed. Rescue teams remain on standby in the area for emergencies.
President Donald Trump announced in a letter that he will increase taxes on numerous imported goods from Canada to 35%, exacerbating the divide between the two North American nations that have faced a significant challenge to their long-standing alliance. The letter sent on Thursday to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney represents a substantial rise from the previous 25% tariff rates that Trump initially implemented in March following months of warnings. The tariffs were reportedly aimed at pressuring Canada to address fentanyl smuggling, despite the relatively low levels of trafficking of the drug from Canada. Additionally, Trump has voiced his dissatisfaction with the trade deficit with Canada, which is primarily driven by oil purchases made by the United States.
A teenager from St. Albans, who was reported missing earlier this week, has been found safe. In a social media update on Thursday night, the St. Albans Police Department confirmed that 14-year-old Olivia KIN-YO-NESS Quinones has been located. They expressed gratitude to their street crimes team, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Marshals Service. Quinones’ parents had reported her missing after she left home on Sunday night and did not return. The exact location where Quinones was found remains unclear.
Vermont State Police and other first responders have found three children who went missing near Camels Hump in Duxbury after a hike on Thursday afternoon on the Long Trail. According to police, two boys, aged 14 and 11, and a 12-year-old girl were part of an organized camp and began a trail off Duxbury Road in Bolton for a hike expected to last 30 minutes around 4 p.m. Officials reported the children missing after they did not return within 90 minutes. Search crews located the children just before 6 a.m. on Friday. Fortunately, all three were unharmed. VSP indicated they were discovered in wooded terrain approximately half a mile from their camp. They were escorted off the mountain and are now being reunited with their families.
Two weeks after a Chesterfield man with dementia went missing from his residence, search teams are still working to locate him. However, as hope diminishes and solid leads are scarce, the focus has transitioned from an urgent rescue to a careful, methodical search for answers. Robert Clay, 78, was last seen early on Tuesday, June 24, walking along Glebe Road, close to his home. He had reportedly left after being put to bed the night before. Clay, who had previously wandered off and was found at a hospital emergency room, had returned home that evening. By the following morning, he was missing again—and this time, he has not returned. Clay’s family is profoundly distressed by his disappearance, expressing gratitude for the assistance of volunteers while urging residents to inspect their properties—including sheds, garages, and less-frequented outbuildings—for any signs.
