WTSA NEWS FOR WEDNESDAY JULY 2nd 2025

A juvenile has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a teenager in New Hampshire. The incident occurred on June 25 in a parking lot in Keene. Responding to a 911 call, investigators discovered Christian Walker, 17, from Orange, Massachusetts, suffering from a gunshot wound. He later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. On Monday, authorities revealed that a juvenile has been charged with second-degree murder in this case. The suspect’s name, age, and other details are being withheld in accordance with New Hampshire law.

On Tuesday, Vermont Governor Phil Scott enacted a comprehensive education reform agreement that was approved by lawmakers the previous month. This initiative establishes a framework for a significant consolidation of school districts, reducing the number of schools and teachers, and implementing a new funding formula. This multi-year initiative aims to mitigate soaring education costs and signifies one of the most substantial political and educational transformations in decades. However, many of the proposed changes—and the anticipated tax savings—will not take effect until at least 2029. Proponents argue that it will optimize the school system in the state and enhance equity and opportunities for students. Conversely, critics have labeled it a significant blow to local governance, predicting larger class sizes, extended bus rides, and the closure of schools that are central to numerous communities.

On Saturday at 7:30 AM, Troopers from the Vermont State Police Westminster Barracks were notified of a single vehicle accident on Vermont Route 100 North in Jamaica. The driver allegedly veered off the road, damaging a street sign, and subsequently left the scene. After an investigation, the driver was found and identified as Jhojan Poma. Poma has been summoned to appear in the Windham County Criminal Division regarding the aforementioned charge.

Tuesday, Vermont’s statewide police agency marks its 78th anniversary, reflecting on nearly 80 years of dedicated service. The Vermont State Police was officially established by the legislature in the spring of 1947, with an executive order from Governor Ernest Gibson that transferred inspectors from the Highway Patrol to the newly created Department of Public Safety on July 1 of that year. Over the decades, the agency has expanded significantly, now comprising over 330 sworn officers, along with 64 emergency dispatchers and civilian support personnel.

Attorney General Charity Clark, alongside New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella, spearheaded a coalition of nine states to submit an amicus brief in support of state court litigation against Meta. This brief, submitted on Monday to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, emphasizes rulings from Vermont and other state courts that determined Meta is not protected by the federal Communications Decency Act from allegations that it employs coercive design elements to addict children to its social media platforms.

A new law in Vermont prohibits the sale of a popular type of pet turtle, now in effect. Pond sliders, including red-eared sliders, are available in pet stores across the country. However, Vermont wildlife officials warn that if released into the wild, these turtles can compete for food and habitat with native species, including those that are threatened or endangered, such as the spiny softshell turtle. The new law allows stores with existing pond sliders in stock to continue selling them, provided they have the necessary documentation. Pet owners are encouraged to keep their turtles, as releasing them into the wild is now illegal, similar to the restrictions already in place for fish species.
