WTSA NEWS FOR MONDAY JUNE 30th 2025

Over $17 million in school funding for Vermont, which was previously revoked by the Trump administration, has now been reinstated. Senator Bernie Sanders stated that he engaged in multiple discussions with U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon, urging her to reconsider the decision after the president eliminated more than $2 billion in COVID relief for schools across the country. A multi-state lawsuit, which included Vermont, ultimately halted the withdrawal of the funding. Vermont school districts depended on this funding for renovation projects, as well as summer and after-school programs.

On Friday afternoon, around 12:30 PM, the Brattleboro Police Department carried out three search warrants in an apartment building on Flat St. Investigations revealed that Marcus Russell and Julie Guthrie were found with crack cocaine. Additional drugs were discovered, leading to the expectation of more arrests, and the investigation continues. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Brattleboro Police Department.

Vermont State Police apprehended a 42-year-old woman on a first-degree aggravated domestic assault charge after a family disturbance on Friday night. Kelly M. French from Guilford was arrested following police response to a report of the incident on Sweet Pond Road around 8:23 p.m. The investigation revealed that French inflicted pain and bodily harm on a family or household member. She was taken to the Vermont State Police Westminster Barracks for processing, where she received court-ordered conditions of release, with bail set at $2,500.

It’s all a part of their project called “Moments in Brattleboro History”. You can find these new signs throughout the downtown district and they have QR codes you can scan with your phone to look at short videos and historical images about each spot.

Senators from our region have collaborated with other lawmakers to urge the Trump administration to preserve what they describe as a crucial program for U.S. service members. Senators Bernie Sanders, Peter Welch, and Jeanne Shaheen have signed a letter addressed to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, requesting continued funding for the Beyond the Yellow Ribbons program. They assert that this program facilitates connections between service members and their families to essential services such as suicide prevention, counseling, substance use disorder treatment, and housing and employment assistance, among others. Sanders emphasizes that in Vermont, the absence of BYR funding will compel the Vermont veterans and family outreach program to cease operations at the end of this month.

State and local authorities are actively searching for a Chesterfield man who has been missing since Tuesday morning. New Hampshire State Police (NHSP) issued a Silver/Missing Vulnerable Adult alert for 77-year-old Robert Clay. An update from New Hampshire Fish and Game on Saturday indicated a credible sighting of Clay at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 24th, also on Glebe Road.
