A New Hampshire couple is facing a potential 20-year federal prison sentence for a bank robbery spree that occurred last summer. Authorities report that Christopher Boisvert and Megan Cox both entered guilty pleas last week in federal court located in Burlington. Court records indicate that the couple executed a robbery at a Rockingham dispensary on August 26. Subsequently, they targeted the TD Bank in Bellows Falls and the Brattleboro Savings and Loan, before escaping to Massachusetts. Law enforcement was able to identify the couple using surveillance footage and DNA evidence. Their sentencing is scheduled for September.
In the midst of 2020 Covid measures, another change took place in Vermont: A law went into effect banning businesses from offering plastic bags to customers, with paper bags only available for a fee. A 2023 analysis of a survey of hundreds of Vermonters found the law appeared to have worked. Plastic bag use in the state dropped 91%, and three-quarters of those surveyed approved of the approach. Now, researchers at the University of Vermont have dug deeper into the 745-person survey conducted by the University of Vermont Center for Rural Studies. The researchers found the law’s strongest effect, by far, was a near-complete elimination of plastic bag use following the ban’s implementation—a 91% drop.
As the boating season begins this year, the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) urges all boaters to thoroughly inspect and clean (or decontaminate) their boats and watercraft. This is essential for safeguarding the state’s waterways from aquatic invasive species such as zebra mussels and Eurasian watermilfoil. Aquatic invasive species are organisms that inhabit lakes and ponds, posing risks when they invade natural lake ecosystems. Boaters are required to adhere to the aquatic nuisance control transport prohibition law, which mandates decontamination of boats and watercraft before transferring between waterbodies. Volunteers at public boat launches, referred to as public access greeters, offer free assistance to boaters in inspecting their vessels to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species.
Brattleboro Memorial Hospital has eliminated six administrative roles in its pursuit of $4 million in budget cuts and new revenue to balance its $119 million annual budget, as reported by VTDigger on June 12. The layoffs affected the senior director of revenue cycle, the director of radiology, the outpatient specialty practice manager, a data scientist, and two executive assistants. Hospital officials indicated in May that they were considering 40 strategies to save or generate funds before the fiscal year ends on September 30. These strategies include increasing revenue through new services and cutting costs via a hiring freeze that commenced on April 1. President Christopher Dougherty stated that the hospital aims to avoid further reductions to its 520-member workforce, although additional cuts cannot be dismissed.
