A new round of evictions from Vermont’s hotel-motel emergency housing program is approaching. Earlier this spring, Governor Phil Scott issued an executive order that allowed certain medically vulnerable individuals to remain in the program, waiving their eligible nights from April through the end of June. However, some recipients received notifications this month indicating that those days would now count against their limit, resulting in approximately 380 households needing to vacate by July 1. Homeless advocates warn that this will likely cause an increase in public camping.
Over thirty horses have been confiscated during an animal welfare investigation in Windham County. Dorset Equine Rescue reports that they assisted Vermont Fish and Wildlife and the Vermont State Police in the seizure of 39 horses from a Townshend property on Tuesday. Authorities have not yet provided information regarding those involved or any potential charges. This marks the fourth animal seizure from the same property, and the nonprofit is requesting donations to support the care of the animals.
A deputy from the Windsor County sheriff’s office has been charged with misdemeanor domestic assault. According to court documents, Kristinnah Adams was cited by Hartford police last week for allegedly assaulting a family member and obstructing access to emergency services. The Windham County State’s Attorney’s Office is handling the case due to possible conflicts of interest. An internal investigation is also underway. Adams has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
A federal judge has ruled that two immigrants detained by ICE must remain in Vermont while their case is ongoing. Jose Ignacio de la Cruz and his stepdaughter, Heidi Perez, were apprehended during a traffic stop on Saturday near the Canadian border in Richford. Advocates claim that their due process rights have been infringed upon. Immigration authorities assert that neither de la Cruz nor Perez possesses legal immigration status in the United States. U.S. District Judge Christina Reiss referenced similar cases when she mandated that they stay in Vermont. De la Cruz is currently held at the Northwest State Correctional Facility, while Perez is at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility.
