Rep. Becca Balint, D-Vermont, is addressing criticism from the Vermont GOP regarding a comment she made about migrant labor during a recent town hall meeting with constituents in Newport. This meeting was intended for the Congresswoman to engage with community members about the policies of the Trump administration and their effects on Vermonters. Immigration was a topic raised by an audience member’s question. “If we don’t have pathways for individuals to enter legally, to work or establish a home here, I will be quite blunt, we will lack the workforce to perform essential tasks,” Balint stated during the town hall on May 28. “Currently, we do not have sufficient individuals in our country to fill existing job vacancies.” Three days later, on June 5, Balint expressed regret for her comment in an interview with VTDigger, describing it as “sloppy and insensitive.”

 

The Community College of Vermont (CCV) held its graduation Saturday at Norwich University. Speakers included Gov. Phil Scott and Sara Byers, co-owner & president of Leonardo’s Pizza. More than 500 students received associate degrees. Students hail from all 14 counties, 11 states and 19 different countries. According to CCV – more than 60% of the Class of 2025 are the first in their family to earn a college degree.

 

The Brattleboro Public Works Department announces that starting today (Monday), BELLCO Excavation, a contractor engaged by the Town, will initiate a stormwater improvement project on Abbott Road. A complete road closure is anticipated from the intersection of Abbott Road and Greenleaf Street to the intersection of Abbott Road and Gateway Farm Lane. This closure will be effective today (Mon.) and Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents are advised to plan accordingly and find alternative routes. Emergency services are informed of this closure and will execute a plan to ensure the continuation of necessary services during this period.

 

A nonprofit arts program in Keene is asking for the city’s financial support after losing federal and state funding. Arts Alive leaders went before the Keene City Council on Thursday, requesting $10,000 to help them continue their work providing grants. Arts Alive leaders said those grants help promote art activities in the Monadnock Region, while also supporting people who are below the median income in that area. Arts Alive leaders said the $10,000 would mean a contribution of less than 50 cents per taxpayer in Keene.

 

In the birthplace of Vermont, despite the rain, the Windsor High School Alumni Parade marched on. The theme this year was sports.This particular alumni association has been organizing events since 1899. According to their Facebook page, the overall winning group was a nod to the Olympics, put on by the class of 2005.
