A company managing parking lots in our area has reached an agreement with the state of Vermont regarding the issuance of fraudulent parking tickets. According to the Vermont Attorney General’s Office, Unified Parking Partners, based in Maine, issued tickets to thousands of drivers, claiming that non-payment could lead to license suspension—an action it is not authorized to take—or negatively affect their credit scores. The company oversees 27 parking lots within the state. It has consented to pay the state $150,000 and amend its deceptive parking notices.
A political consultant who sent voters artificial intelligence-generated robocalls mimicking former President Joe Biden last year went to trial Thursday in New Hampshire. Jurors may need to consider not only his guilt or innocence but also whether the state actually conducted its first-in-the-nation presidential primary. Steven Kramer, facing decades in prison if convicted of voter suppression and impersonating a candidate, has admitted to orchestrating a message sent to thousands of voters two days before the Jan. 23, 2024, primary. This message featured an AI-generated voice resembling the Democratic president’s, using his phrase “What a bunch of malarkey” and implying that voting in the primary would prevent voters from casting ballots in November.
Thursday marked a decade since a prison escape and manhunt in New York’s North Country that captured national attention. Two convicted murderers escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, initiating a three-week, $20 million manhunt. On the night of June 5, 2015, Richard Matt and David Sweat fled the maximum-security prison. They were found missing the following morning, June 6. On June 12, prison seamstress Joyce Mitchell was arrested for allegedly conspiring with Matt and Sweat. Additionally, prison guard Gene Palmer was arrested on June 24 for his involvement in aiding the escape. Two days later, Richard Matt was shot and killed by law enforcement in Franklin County, New York. Shortly thereafter, on June 28, David Sweat was shot and apprehended in Constable, New York, effectively concluding the 23-day manhunt.
On Wednesday, New Hampshire Senator Maggie Hassan cautioned that reductions in the budget bill will adversely affect not only those dependent on Medicaid but also the providers. Hassan noted that the average travel time to labor and delivery services exceeds 40 minutes in the state, warning that this situation will deteriorate further if Medicaid cuts lead to more hospital closures. She emphasized the difficulties in managing other chronic conditions and illnesses, such as diabetes and cancer, as well as the support for residents with disabilities in New Hampshire. She described this as one of the most significant healthcare cuts in U.S. history, urging her Senate colleagues to reject it.

Vermonters can now enjoy restaurant-style drinks at home this summer. A temporary COVID measure allowing to-go cocktails for restaurants was set to end on July 1, but Governor Scott has signed a bill making it permanent, making Vermont the 30th state to do so. When ordering a drink to go, remember that you must also order food, and there is a limit of two drinks per person. These drinks are only for home consumption, not for outside the restaurant or in your vehicle. They come with a tamper-evident seal and labels, and can only be purchased between 10 a.m. and 11 p.m.
