WTSA NEWS FOR TUESDAY MAY 6th 2025

Police are investigating a shooting incident that occurred around 9:45 p.m. Saturday, where a man sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Officers responded to Groundworks Collaborative on South Main Street, finding the victim conscious and alert. He was subsequently transported to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital for treatment. Libby Bennett, executive director at Groundworks, stated that the incident likely took place elsewhere, and the victim walked to their location for help. Following the incident, Groundworks temporarily locked down but reopened the Drop-In Center at 9 a.m. Sunday after consulting with police. The area between Groundworks and Lawrence Street was closed for about two hours during the investigation. Authorities indicated that the incident appears isolated, posing no ongoing threat to the public, and no arrests have been made. Police encourage anyone with information to contact Det. Lt. Greg Eaton at 802-257-7950 or the tip line at 802-251-8188.

Authorities have identified the officer involved in a police shooting in Keene, New Hampshire, last week. On Tuesday, officers responded to a distress call at Baker and Colby streets, where they encountered 25-year-old Cullen Costa with a weapon. New Hampshire’s attorney general reported that Officer Jake Dube shot Costa once in the chest. Dube has three years of experience with the Keene police, and Costa is currently in stable condition at the hospital.

Invasive insects are affecting Vermont, with emerald ash borers confirmed since 2018. They have spread across the state, particularly in Chittenden County and the Champlain Islands, while Essex County remains unaffected. Most sightings occur in spring when trees are bare. Recent detections include Franklin County and southwestern towns. To prevent further spread, buy firewood locally and manage ash trees on your property.

Claremont mourns the passing of Joel Tremblay, its chief building official and health officer, who died Saturday evening due to a medical emergency during an inspection. His unexpected departure creates a considerable gap in city operations and deeply affects those who worked with him.

Stop by Saturday, May 17, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Rockingham Free Public Library’s top floor meeting room in Bellows Falls for an informal discussion with Windham County Senators Nader Hashim and Wendy Harrison, along with House Representatives Michelle Bos-Lun and Leslie Goldman. Bring your questions about current issues.

Do you have bats? If so, the wildlife officials in New Hampshire are seeking your assistance. This summer, they are undertaking the New Hampshire Bat Counts to assess bat colonies due to notable population decreases. If bats inhabit your property, you can contribute data on two occasions this summer, in June and July. For further information, please visit wildlife.nh.gov.
