A second individual has been apprehended in connection with a shooting in Burlington’s Old North End. The Burlington Police Department arrested 27-year-old Taylor Vuley from Colchester on Wednesday, charging her with accessory after the fact and providing false information to an officer. This follows a shooting incident on “eye” + “shuhm” Isham Street on Monday, where doorbell footage allegedly captured a suspect firing at two individuals on mopeds, resulting in one person suffering serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Vuley’s partner, Nazareth Gonzalez from Winooski, was previously arrested as the alleged shooter, facing charges of attempted second-degree murder and reckless endangerment, and is currently held without bail. Police noted that Gonzalez and the victim were acquainted. Vuley was cited and released, with a court appearance scheduled for June. Authorities confirmed she has no prior criminal record. Local residents expressed their distress over the incident occurring in broad daylight.
On Thursday, the Trump administration escalated its campaign to shield fossil fuel companies from accountability by filing lawsuits against four states taking action on climate. The Department of Justice sued Hawaii and Michigan in an attempt to block them from pursuing future climate lawsuits, and separately sued New York and Vermont to strike down newly enacted Climate Superfund laws. These politically motivated lawsuits are part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to undermine state authority and protect the interests of Big Oil.
A historic covered bridge in Vermont was severely damaged by a box truck on Wednesday morning. State police reported that the driver, Bay Van noo-yen Nguyen, 49, from Lowell, Massachusetts, fled the scene but was located in Dover thirty minutes later. He has been cited for leaving the accident and other offenses, with a court appearance scheduled for June.
State police training led to the discovery of a body in Westmore on Wednesday, believed to be that of Sue Mi Ko, a woman who went missing during a January hike. The body was sent to the medical examiner for identification and cause of death determination, with authorities not suspecting foul play.
A recent study from UVM indicates that Black and Hispanic drivers in Vermont continue to be stopped and searched more frequently than their white counterparts, despite a decrease in arrests since 2020. Although traffic stops have risen again post-pandemic, the research reveals that police search Black and Hispanic drivers nearly twice as often, even though white drivers are more likely to possess contraband.
Authorities report that a teacher arrived intoxicated at West Rutland School. Lori Antal, 55, from Manchester, was arrested for DUI after showing signs of impairment. This marks the second incident this year involving a teacher’s intoxication at the school.
In New Hampshire, emergency crews fought brush fires on Wednesday due to dry and windy conditions. Multiple fires ignited statewide, including one in Winchester that scorched 40 acres on Stone Mountain. Fire Chief Barry Bellom reported that around 35 local departments responded, facing challenges from the terrain and weather. He noted that the wind exacerbated the fire’s spread, and initial personnel shortages hindered containment efforts.More than 100 firefighters were working to contain the fire at its peak. The chief says state forest rangers are now working to determine the fire’s cause.
