The body of a Hinsdale man, reported missing on April 23rd, has been discovered in the Ashuelot River, approximately one and a half miles from where he was last seen. Hinsdale Police Chief Melissa Evans expressed condolences to the family of Scott Plante, stating that the cause of death remains undetermined. Plante, 62, was reported missing by his concerned roommate after she had not heard from him since April 16. Initially believing he was visiting a friend, she contacted the police when she found his vehicle at Millstream Riverfront Park on April 23. Surveillance footage revealed he parked on April 17, exited his vehicle around 9 a.m., and walked toward the river. Various agencies, including New Hampshire Fish and Game and the Hinsdale Fire Department, assisted in the search, which involved boat and dive teams. Plante’s body was found shortly after 11 a.m. on Monday. Authorities confirmed there is no threat to the public and encouraged anyone with information to reach out to Sergeant Seth Alle of the New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol at 503-227-2117.

A 15-year-old from New Hampshire drowned in a canoe accident at Governor’s Lake in Raymond shortly after midnight on Sunday. First responders located his body around 8 a.m., and he was not wearing a life jacket.

A New Hampshire hiker has returned home after being stranded in the Pemigewasset Wilderness due to heavy rains over the weekend. Ryan O’Shea, 19, began a two-day hike to Owl’s Head on Friday, but rising waters from Franconia and Lincoln Brooks made crossing dangerous on Saturday. A trail runner from the Pemi Valley Search and Rescue Team found O’Shea on Sunday morning; he indicated he was safe but unable to cross the water. Rescue crews reached him by crossing the brook, and he was safely reunited with his family.

Congresswoman Maggie Goodlander of New Hampshire has endorsed a bill to limit executive authority over tariffs. She questions the legitimacy of the Trump administration’s tariffs, particularly those imposed on China, and argues that such powers should reside with Congress. Goodlander contends that these tariffs, along with significant reductions in Medicaid and Social Security, are intended to finance tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. The administration, however, claims that the tariffs aim to create fair competition and prevent foreign exploitation of the U.S. economy.

A federal judge approved the $11 million sale of Burke Mountain Resort to Bear Den Partners, which includes the Graham family, Burke Mountain Academy, and Jon Schafer. Faculty and alumni of Dartmouth College are urging President Sian Beilock to oppose what they perceive as President Trump’s threat to higher education. They note that Beilock is the only Ivy League president not to have signed a petition from the American Association of Colleges and Universities, which has garnered support from many institutions. In an open letter, history professor Bethany Moreton calls on Beilock to uphold the principles of higher education. Beilock recently defended her choice not to sign the petition in a communication to the Dartmouth community, while University of Vermont Interim President Patricia Prelock has since added her name to the list of supporters.
