Masked individuals in plainclothes apprehended an Upper Valley resident, Mohsen Mahdawi, during a citizenship interview in Colchester on Monday morning, despite his lawful permanent resident status. State Senator Becca White witnessed Mahdawi, handcuffed and surrounded by masked men, being placed into an unmarked black vehicle shortly after noon. His attorneys filed a petition for unlawful detention in the U.S. District Court in Vermont, leading Judge William Sessions III to issue an order preventing Mahdawi’s removal from Vermont or the U.S. until further notice. As of Monday evening, Mahdawi, 34, is believed to be held at the Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans.

The house suffered extensive fire and water damage, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation
On Monday, Treasurer Mike Pieciak announced a $25 incentive for anyone who opens an Achieving Better Life Experience (ABLE) account in Vermont during April, in honor of #ABLEtoSave month. ABLE accounts enable individuals with qualifying disabilities and their families to save and invest without jeopardizing their eligibility for Medicaid, SSI, or other needs-based benefits. The Vermont ABLE program aims to enhance financial stability for individuals with disabilities and address the “benefits cliff,” where minor personal savings can lead to a loss of essential public benefits.
