WTSA NEWS FOR THURSDAY APRIL 10th 2025

A record number of Vermonters have enrolled in Vermont Health Connect, the state’s health insurance marketplace. According to the Department of Health, the 2025 open enrollment period last fall saw 32,000 sign-ups, marking an 11 percent increase. Due to federal subsidies from the pandemic, 95 percent of enrollees benefit from reduced premium costs. However, Republican leaders in Congress have frequently pledged to repeal the Affordable Care Act, leaving the future of these subsidies uncertain after they expire at the end of 2025.

Vermont Senators Bernie Sanders and Peter Welch criticized President Trump’s tariff strategy on Tuesday. The latest tariffs took effect at midnight Wednesday, leading China to retaliate with an 84% increase on U.S. goods. During a Senate Finance Committee hearing with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Welch expressed that the trade policy was illogical. He supports tariffs when they are strategically applied against unfair practices, but noted that Vermont grain importers face 25% tariffs, which, along with Canadian retaliation, is driving up energy costs. The Trump administration has partially justified these tariffs due to fentanyl trafficking from Canada, a claim Sanders, who lives 50 miles from the border, called that justification a lie.

Police are reminding you to keep your head up and your phone down while driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving accounted for 33 deaths in Vermont in the past five years. That means almost 10% of all vehicle-related deaths in the state involved distraction. Federal authorities joined Vermont and New Hampshire police at a press conference on Wednesday to raise awareness about the risks.

A Chester man, Paul Waysville, 69, was arrested for suspected DUI after a single-vehicle crash on Westminster West Road Tuesday afternoon around 2:24 p.m. Vermont State Police noted signs of impairment at the scene. He was processed at the Westminster Barracks and later released with a citation to appear in Windham County Superior Court for the DUI charge.
