On Saturday, thousands gathered in our region to protest the Trump administration and Elon Musk, advocating for democracy and constitutional rights. In Montpelier, over 15,000 participants rallied for healthcare, education, social security, immigrants, civil rights, and free speech. Additionally, nearly 2,000 people braved the rain in downtown Brattleboro to urge President Trump to respect the U.S. Constitution and to hear speakers encouraging civic engagement.
This Morning April 6th 2025, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan will host a press conference at 10AM outside of the Manchester VA to speak out against the Trump Administration’s reckless actions to weaken services for America’s veterans. The Senators will be joined by veterans who get their care at the Manchester VA Medical Center and representatives of those who work at and provide care at VA facilities.
The Trump Administration plans to cut 80,000 staff from the VA – nearly one in five employees – who help veterans get care and benefits. Cutting one-fifth of the VA’s staff would hobble its ability to help veterans get the care and benefits that they have earned.

The Vermont State Police have apprehended Jozef I. Eller, a 32-year-old former employee, in connection with a stabbing incident at Café Provence in Brandon on Saturday afternoon. After a six-hour search, Eller was found in Rochester around 10:10 p.m. and arrested without incident. The stabbing occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. when Eller attacked the restaurant’s chef and owner, 71-year-old Robert Barral. Following the assault, Eller fled north on U.S. Route 7 in his white 2017 Ford F-150. He is being held without bail on charges of attempted second-degree murder and violating a no-trespassing order, with an arraignment scheduled for 12:30 p.m. today. Barral was transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center, where he is reported to be in stable condition.
A federal judge has transferred the case of Rumeysa Ozturk, a detained Tufts University doctoral student, to Vermont, where she was initially held before being sent to an immigration detention facility in Louisiana. The 30-year-old Turkish national was apprehended by immigration officials in Somerville, Massachusetts, on March 25. After being briefly held in New Hampshire and Vermont, she was flown to an ICE detention center in Basile, Louisiana. A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson claimed last week, without evidence, that Ozturk was involved in activities supporting Hamas, a group designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S.
A new study investigates the extent to which maple trees absorb “forever chemicals” and their potential presence in maple syrup. Emily Sigman, a first-year PhD student at Dartmouth College, developed her passion for maple tapping in her New Haven, Connecticut backyard. She is currently researching PFAS, persistent chemicals found in various consumer products, alongside a team testing 10 sites in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont—8 of which are contaminated and 2 serve as controls. Sigman hopes her research will encourage urban residents to engage with this natural product.
The recent ice storm has shortened the maple sugaring season for some producers in southern Vermont, causing significant damage by toppling trees and disrupting power. According to the Vermont Maple Sugar Makers’ Association, while some producers managed to clear the damage quickly, others are still struggling and may face challenges for the remainder of the season. Despite the storm, officials note that the lack of cold weather has been beneficial for production, and most sugar makers are expected to have an average year.
