Mail carriers in New York and Vermont are part of a national effort urging President Trump to refrain from privatizing the U.S. Postal Service. Discussions about privatization, aimed at making the service profitable, have involved Trump and Elon Musk since January. Recently, the National Association of Mail Carriers held rallies in Plattsburgh and Brattleboro. Opponents warn that transferring the Postal Service to the Department of Government Efficiency could lead to privatization and higher costs for rural areas.
On Saturday morning, Vermont State Police from the Westminster Barracks assisted Rescue Inc. with a violent individual in Guilford under the influence of drugs. Investigation identified David Scott Jr. (22) as having assaulted a household member. He received a criminal citation and appeared in court on Monday, March 24th, to face domestic assault charges.
A recent state report indicates that Vermont is falling short of its emission reduction goals. The state is mandated to cut emissions by 26% this year, yet current data suggests it is off track, complicating future reductions. As 2025 approaches, Jared Duval from the Energy Action Network monitored fuel sales, but the figures were disappointing. “It was evident that we were not on course to meet the first legal obligation of the Global Warming Solutions Act,” Duval stated. This law requires a 26% reduction in emissions from 2005 levels by 2025, with potential lawsuits from Vermonters if not met. Preliminary estimates show Vermont is currently 1% above the 2025 target. While fossil fuel sales for heating dropped by 4.8% in 2024, gas and diesel sales rose by 3%, indicating insufficient progress.
A local woman has been charged with domestic assault following a family dispute that led to her arrest early Sunday. Vermont State Police responded to a report of the altercation in Stamford around 12:11 a.m. on Saturday, March 23rd. Investigators found that 43-year-old Corrie L. Dolle had inflicted bodily harm on a household member. She was arrested, processed at the Shaftsbury Barracks, and later released with a citation and court-imposed conditions. The identity of the victim has not been disclosed, in line with the police’s policy on domestic violence cases.
The New Hampshire attorney general’s office has reached a $10 million settlement with Michael Gilpatrick, who claimed he was sexually assaulted by multiple individuals in a stairwell at a youth detention center in the 1990s. His lawsuit was set to be the second of over 1,300 to go to trial, but both parties opted for an out-of-court settlement, according to his lawyers. This settlement is four times the maximum available through the state’s abuse victims’ fund, yet it is less than half of the $38 million awarded in a previous trial, which the state is contesting to reduce to $475,000.
Gun and outdoor sports enthusiasts report a noticeable increase in female participation. This year’s Gun and Outdoor Sportsman Show, organized by the Lamoille Valley Fish and Game Club, attracted around 2,000 attendees and featured approximately 65 vendors at the Champlain Valley Expo in Essex Junction, offering a variety of firearms, sportswear, and ammunition. Vendors noted a growing interest among women in personal safety, driven by concerns about national issues. Additionally, officials indicated that firearm sales were affected this year, as many Vermonters faced a 72-hour waiting period due to state regulations.
