Hundreds of employee-owners at Vermont Information Processing in Colchester are set to receive significant payments following the company’s impending sale to Warburg Pincus for approximately $1 billion. Employees with ownership stakes learned earlier this month that they could receive up to $10 million each, based on their tenure. The sale, which is expected to finalize soon, includes debt in its valuation. Approximately 300 employees are anticipated to receive over $1 million, while around 50 employees with over 20 years of service may receive about $10 million. Most employees reside and work in Vermont, with disbursements expected to begin next month.
U.S. Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and John Cornyn (R-TX) have reintroduced bipartisan legislation aimed at assisting parents in safeguarding their children from identity theft. Senator Hassan emphasized the challenges new parents face, stating that identity theft can severely impact children, often going unnoticed until adulthood. The proposed bill seeks to simplify the process for parents to freeze their children’s credit files. Senator Cornyn noted that children are particularly vulnerable to identity theft, which can lead to long-term financial repercussions. The legislation aims to protect families by allowing parents to freeze their children’s credit files more efficiently. TransUnion expressed support for the initiative, highlighting its commitment to helping parents secure their children’s financial futures. Research indicates that nearly one million children fall victim to identity theft annually, costing families close to $1 billion. Currently, parents must contact all three major credit bureaus to freeze their children’s credit files, but the Credit Freeze for Kids Act would enable them to reach out to just one bureau, which would then notify the others within three days.
Following the dismissal of over 1,000 employees by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) last week, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has written to VA Secretary Doug Collins, urging the reversal of these layoffs to protect the health care of America’s veterans amid existing staffing shortages. Sanders had previously voted to confirm Collins as VA secretary earlier this month.
Vermont’s Killington Resort, the largest ski and snowboard destination in Eastern North America, has announced plans for the replacement of the Superstar chairlift and its spring skiing operations for 2025. The Superstar Express Quad will close on Sunday, April 13th, to begin construction on a new 6-passenger high-speed lift. Before its closure, Killington will host a special sendoff party to commemorate the lift’s 38 years of service. Due to the lift replacement, the Audi FIS Ski World Cup will be held at Copper Mountain, Colorado, over Thanksgiving weekend 2025, with plans to return to Killington in 2026.
Over 95% of Vermont’s 5,000 miles of snowmobile trails are now open following this weekend’s storm, a welcome development for snowmobile enthusiasts after several challenging years. This “white gold” is vital not only for ski resorts but also for the snowmobile industry, bringing smiles to riders. The economic contribution of snowmobilers in New Hampshire and Vermont reaches hundreds of millions of dollars annually, but poor snow years can severely impact the industry.
