A student from Norwich University has tragically passed away following a collapse during a training exercise. According to the Northfield police, Daniel Bermudez succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday at the Central Vermont Medical Center. During outdoor training drills, Bermudez collapsed and was immediately transported to the hospital, where he later died. An autopsy has been ordered to ascertain the cause of death. The university has announced that support resources will be made available to assist students, faculty, and staff in coping with this loss.
Vermont is updating its waste management strategy. The Agency of Natural Resources, in its five-year plan, aims to expand efforts beyond recycling and composting. The Department of Environmental Conservation reports that the Coventry landfill has less than 20 years of capacity remaining, with no plans for a new facility. The strategy focuses on reducing waste generation and enhancing sustainable materials management, including composting and recycling, while also minimizing the use of toxic products.
Devastation in California resonates deeply with some Vermonters. While Californians face tragedy directly, those far away are affected emotionally. Vermonters connected to Los Angeles stay informed through news and videos from the area. They are either mourning losses or fearing for their loved ones and properties. The California fires have claimed at least 25 lives and destroyed over 12,000 structures, with hundreds of thousands under evacuation orders. Currently, more than 400 Red Cross workers are assisting LA County with food, shelter, emotional support, and recovery efforts, including two volunteers from Vermont.
A New Hampshire pilot, David Allop, 55, was arrested Wednesday morning at a Georgia airport for DUI while performing pre-flight checks in the cockpit. A Transportation Security Administration officer detected the smell of alcohol and alerted the police, leading to Allop’s arrest. He has held a commercial pilot’s license since 2008. Charging records do not specify the substance he was allegedly under the influence of.
History is repeating itself after eight years. This weekend, Vermonters will unite in solidarity ahead of Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration on Monday. A “Stand In” event in Burlington will coincide with the National Women’s March, similar to the gathering in 2017. On Saturday at 10 a.m., participants will assemble at the top of Church Street. Organizers aim to protect constitutional freedoms, including women’s health care, LGBTQ rights, and immigrant rights for all in Chittenden County, emphasizing that the stakes for women are now even higher than they were during the previous rally.
