Attorney Generals from Vermont, New York and New Hampshire are
among a coalition of 32 AGs urging congressional leaders to keep
children safe online. They are asking lawmakers to pass the Kids
Online Safety Act, which aims to strengthen safety features, give
parents more control, and take aim at addictive practices on social
media. In a letter to lawmakers, the group of AGs cites the growing
mental health crisis linked to social media, saying that studies show
minors spend more than five hours online a day.
Gov. Phil Scott has appointed Andrew Collier as the commissioner of
the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles. Collier is from Westford
and has been the deputy commissioner of the Vermont Department
of Liquor and Lottery since 2021 and served as a Vermont state
trooper for 11 years. He is taking the place of Wanda Minoli, who is
now the commissioner of Buildings and General Service.
Vermont Senator Peter Welch is targeting high credit card fees imposed on businesses. At a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, he challenged Visa and MasterCard representatives regarding their “swipe fees,” which he claims cost small businesses over $100 billion last year. Welch advocates for the Credit Card Competition Act to enhance competition in the credit card market and reduce costs for small businesses.
Staffers at Copley Hospital in Morristown have voted to unionize,
organizing with United Nurses and Allied Professionals. Almost 100
registered nurses are already unionized at the hospital. Now, more
than 150 support staff will join them “to improve working conditions
and respect,” according to a statement from the Northeast Nurses
Association.
Vermont native and Olympic bronze medalist Ilona Maher may soon add another title to her accolades as a finalist on the season finale of ‘Dancing with the Stars.‘ Maher, who contributed to the United States’ first-ever medal in Women’s rugby sevens this July, advanced to the final round with her partner Alan Bersten after Tuesday’s performance. She will compete for the title next Tuesday, alongside fellow Olympian Stephen Nedoroscik.
A New Hampshire initiative established two years ago to support affordable housing has reportedly facilitated the creation of 4,657 units statewide. The Invest NH Housing program recently updated Governor Chris Sununu and the Executive Council, highlighting that the $100 million investment from the Department of Business and Economic Affairs in 2022 has financed various projects. The program provides grants for affordable housing development, funding per unit, and resources for demolishing deteriorated properties.
