Brattleboro police are investigating a death. Saturday morning, just before 9, they were called for a report of a person in the water. A male was found dead in the Whetstone Brook, where it passes under Main St. The road was closed to traffic for several hours as Brattleboro Fire Department assisted in recovering the body. Police say the death is not considered suspicious at this time, but they are still investigating. They are holding off on releasing his identity until the family can be notified.
On Saturday morning, the Vermont State Police were notified of an object floating in the Sherman Reservoir. At approximately 9:47 AM, the State Police located the body of a male floating in the reservoir. The body matched the description of Matthew Houskeeper who was reported missing on August 14th,2024. The body will be sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, in Burlington, Vermont where an autopsy and formal identification will be performed. The Vermont State Police would like to thank all the agencies that assisted in the search to include the Rowe Massachusetts Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police, the Vermont Department of Fish & Wildlife; New England K9 Search and Rescue; and Rescue Inc.
Burlington police report that a shooting on Church Street early Saturday morning resulted in one death and the arrest of a suspect. The incident occurred around 12:28 a.m. outside Red Square, where 22-year-old Aaliyah Johnson from South Burlington was apprehended with a .45 caliber pistol. A Community Service Officer heard the gunfire and found 30-year-old Teville Williams from Stowe injured. Efforts to assist Williams were obstructed by a large crowd, necessitating their removal to secure the crime scene. The altercation reportedly began inside Red Square, where Williams allegedly assaulted Johnson, leading to her confrontation and subsequent shooting of him on the street. Authorities confirm that this incident is unrelated to recent events.
A knife attack in Montpelier resulted in one person being hospitalized. Police received a 911 call around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday regarding a fight near 39 Main Street. The victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, sustained multiple cuts to the head and face but was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Central Vermont Medical Center and subsequently released. The suspected attacker fled the scene and is still at large, while another unidentified individual was arrested as an accessory.
On Saturday night, shortly after 10 PM, a Vermont State Police Trooper stopped a vehicle speeding through downtown Putney. The driver, 18-year-old Sander Scott from Brattleboro, showed signs of alcohol impairment. When instructed to remove his keys, Scott resisted and attempted to flee, leading to a struggle with the Trooper. He drove off but crashed soon after. Scott was found in a nearby river and arrested. He was released on a citation to appear in Vermont Superior Court, Windham Criminal Division, on August 26, 2024, at 12:30 PM, and was given Conditions of Release.
A New Hampshire native was arrested after a serious two-car crash on Friday afternoon. According to the Bernardston Police Department, at around 3:22 p.m. officers were at the scene of Route 10 and Turners Falls Road for reports of a vehicle crash. But there were no injuries reported in the crash. Officials revealed one of the drivers of the accident as a 42-year-old man from Dublin, New Hampshire who was arrested for having possession of a firearm, ammunition, and an unnamed “Class B Drug” on him at the time of that incident.
