The Vermont Supreme Court has ruled that Tate Rheaume, accused of causing a fatal crash that killed Rutland Police Officer Jessica Ebbighausen, will remain in custody until his trial. Rheaume was allegedly fleeing from police in July 2023 when he collided head-on with Ebbighausen’s cruiser. He faces charges of aggravated murder, which carries a mandatory life sentence. Rheaume’s appeal for bail was denied, as the court found that the proposed release conditions did not adequately address the risks of flight and public safety. A trial date has not yet been set.
The Vermont Democratic Party has issued a warning regarding an anonymous letter sent to Guilford residents, which falsely accuses Select Board Chair and State Representative candidate Zon Eastes of election fraud. The party asserts that the letter mimics official election materials and contains false statements that breach election law. Eastes recently won against challenger Jason Herron, who denied any connection to the mailer.
As the state awaits a major disaster declaration from the White House, Governor Phil Scott emphasized the need for volunteers to assist with clean-up efforts. “Whether for an hour or a full day, your help can make a significant impact,” Scott stated during a press conference on Wednesday. His administration also revealed plans to allocate $5 million to the communities most affected by flooding. Chief Recovery Officer Doug Farnham mentioned collaboration with the Vermont Bond Bank and State Treasurer Mike Pieciak for additional funding. Scott will monitor the status of the disaster declaration request while encouraging Vermonters to contribute as they are able.
From Friday until September 2, state law enforcement is collaborating with federal agencies to address impaired driving. The Vermont Agency of Transportation is urging drivers to remain sober and plan ahead for the holiday weekend. Between 2019 and 2023, 56% of fatal crashes in Vermont involved impaired drivers, with 237 children affected. Last year, there were 42 fatalities linked to impaired driving. Officials recommend planning for a designated driver, contacting a friend or family member, or utilizing ride-sharing services for safe transportation.
