A Vernon man, Glen Buehler, 68, was sentenced to two and a half years in federal prison for possessing child pornography. Buehler downloaded over 4,000 video and image files in February 2023 from the BitTorrent network. Despite being arrested and released on conditions last April, he continued to access illicit material, leading to his re-arrest in June for violating conditions. In addition to prison time, Buehler will serve a 15-year term of supervised release and pay $33,000 in restitution.

A Middlebury man, Jerry Hoffman, 31, is facing attempted murder charges for stabbing a man multiple times on College Street around 7:45 p.m. The police found Hoffman outside his home with two knives, refusing to drop them. He ran into Otter Creek before eventually surrendering. Hoffman was taken into custody after being evaluated at the hospital. The victim’s condition remains unknown.

The Vermont Senate on Wednesday gave preliminary approval to a
bill that would enhance flood safety efforts statewide. The bill would
address development in high-hazard river corridors by implementing
new regulations to keep future development outside of those areas. It
would also expand wetland protection and restoration as well as
improve dam safety.

Southeast Vermont Transit and The Brattleboro Development Credit Corporation are introducing MicroMOO2, their second micro transit initiative in Brattleboro. The service will launch on April 15 and operate from 5-11:30pm on weekdays. It is free and available to all community members. To schedule rides, an app is provided, but trips must start and end within Brattleboro. A public meeting will be held in early April to address questions and provide a demonstration on how to book rides.

Vermont House lawmakers have given initial approval to a bill that imposes strict requirements on utilities to purchase renewable power over the next five to 10 years. However, there is still disagreement over the final cost for both utilities and ratepayers. The bill, known as H. 289, updates the Renewable Energy Standard to align with the global and national energy transition. It mandates larger utilities to obtain 100% of their power from hydro, wind, and solar by 2030, while smaller utilities have until 2035. Additionally, the bill aims to increase in-state production of renewable energy in Vermont.

A New Hampshire man who drove a school bus for children with disabilities has been charged along with his wife with taking sexually explicit photos of a young girl, a federal prosecutor said Wednesday. Paul and Krystal Baird, of Keene, were arrested Wednesday and charged with manufacturing child sex abuse images. Until he was fired Wednesday, Paul Baird had worked for a private transportation company under contract with the ConVal Regional School District. But school officials said it does not appear that the investigation involves their students, staff or any school-related activity. The arrests came less than two weeks after investigators say Paul Baird shared three images on a dark website dedicated to the sexual exploitation of children, U.S. Attorney Jane Young said at a news conference. She urged anyone with information about the couple to contact the Authorities.
