A Vermont law in place since July, has imposed restrictions on the resale of catalytic converters to decrease thefts. Scrap processors can’t buy more than one per day from an individual. Transporting two or more requires paperwork. The law requires scrap processors to go through paperwork, and limits the number of converters that can be purchased, moved, and sold at the same time. Punishments for stealing them can include grand larceny, unlawful mischief, and even prison. Illegal transactions can be fined up to $1,000 for the first time, and up to $25,000 for a repeat.

 

After 30 years at the Vermont Chamber of Commerce — 15 as president — Betsy Bishop, will step down in the new year. Bishop has dedicated her career to the Vermont business community, including playing a leadership role during critical transition periods like the health care transition of 2014, Tropical Storm Irene, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the 2023 summer floods.

 

Keene and other cities and towns across New Hampshire are working to ensure they are ready for the upcoming first-in-the-nation primary. City and town clerks anticipate needing more volunteers than usual and Keene only has about 40 people signed up for the task. With less than a month left before the polls open, there is an urgent need to boost the number of volunteers to ensure a successful election.

 

Curt Alpeter has been appointed CEO of the Grafton Village Cheese Co., a Windham Foundation subsidiary based in Grafton, Vt. He was previously with Runamok Maple specialty food brand, also in Vermont. Alpeter is active in the community, having served as board chair of Audubon Vermont and board member of the Charlotte Land Trust and North Country Federal Credit Union.

 

The state of New Hampshire is transitioning to a new free emergency alert message system. The new system by Genasys will replace the CodeRED service starting on January 1st. People who are signed up for the current system has started to receive text alerts about the change.
