Former employees of the defunct Koffee Kup Bakery and Vermont Bread Company have won a court battle that will see them receive some back pay. The bakery company abruptly closed in 2021, putting over 300 employees out on the street with no warning. In a class action lawsuit, employees claimed that was a violation of the WARN Act, which requires businesses to give their workers advanced notice. A federal judge ruled in favor of the employees, saying they should be paid for up to 60 days worth of pay and benefits.
A Brattleboro man. Jailed on robbery charges this week is now accused of allegedly attempting to harm a nurse at the facility. Corrections staff say 28 year old Cory Munger was receiving medication when he forcibly grabbed a nurse, wrapping his arm around her throat and holding a pen to her neck. Correctional officers immediately intervened to thwart the attempt. The nurse, a contractor under health provider Wellpath, received a medical evaluation at the Springfield Hospital following the incident.
A Burlington woman was charged for being in possession of a stolen vehicle on interstate 91 in Putney. 43 year old Jessica Ploof was located walking on I91 northbound in the Town of Putney and State Police stopped to offer assistance. Police say the vehicle in question had run out of gas and had been reported stolen several days earlier from Burlington. Ploof, was released on citation to appear at Vermont Superior Court, Windham Criminal Division at a later date and time.
As the new school year is ready to begin, a new staff member at youth services of Windham county is ready to help get at-risk youth on the right path. Jacqueline Sullivan joined Youth Services as its Balanced and Restorative Justice Coordinator this spring. The program is a supportive case management and restorative justice program for youth on probation, youth at a higher risk of involvement with the juvenile justice system, and youth ages 10 and up with low school attendance—at risk for truancy.
On Monday, the Brattleboro Utilities Division will be installing a manhole at the intersection of Green Street, Garden Drive and Church Street. During this project, Church Street will be closed and Green Street will be closed from Bullock Street to High Street. Residents will be able to access their homes and may choose to utilize Retting Place for access, also. The work is scheduled between the hours of 6:30 am and 4:00 pm. Motorists should seek alternate routes.
