WTSA News For Your Wednesday, June 14th:

Vermont congresswoman Becca Balint has been appointed to the house judiciary committee. The judiciary Committee is at the forefront of some of the most pressing issues of our time, including protecting Constitutional freedoms and civil liberties, oversight of the U.S. Departments of Justice and Homeland Security, legal and regulatory reform, antitrust laws, terrorism and crime, gun violence prevention and immigration reform.  Balint will be the sole openly gay member and democratic representative from the Northeast on the Committee.

The Windham Windsor Housing trust is holding a 35th birthday party in Brattleboro next week. In 1987 the Trust started out by preserving the historic homes on Canal Street in Brattleboro which were in rough shape but home to 14 families. Before the renovation, the buildings were slated for demolition to make room for a mini mart.  A block party will be held at that site June 22nd.

Senator Peter Welch is co-sponsoring legislation to facilitate the clean energy transition by helping consumers access their utility data and share that data with third parties. Families and businesses rely on home energy usage data to make decisions about energy efficiency and clean energy upgrades—but that data is difficult to access, making it harder for consumers to reduce their energy consumption, switch to new energy sources, and take advantage of Inflation Reduction Act and Infrastructure, Investment, and Jobs Act programs to facilitate those upgrades.   Welch says the bill would   help consumers access critical data on their home energy use, giving them the tools, they need to understand their energy consumption and make changes at home to improve efficiency, lower their energy bills, and help fight climate change.

Vermont’s Department of Disabilities, Aging, and Independent Living is observing World Elder Abuse Awareness Day today. An estimated 1 in 10 older Americans experience elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation each year. However, experts believe elder abuse is significantly under-reported due to the lack of social support available to victims. Research indicates that as few as 1 in 24 cases of elder abuse come to the attention of authorities. Vermont took a significant step forward this year with a groundbreaking proposal that would update a statute that is nearly half-a-century old, prioritizing victims; rights and dignity in the State’s efforts to protect vulnerable adults. The support garnered for these updates presents a promising outlook for the bills successful passage this biennium.

The state of New Hampshire hit a record-low unemployment rate for May. Officials say the preliminary seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for May was 1.9%, down 0.2 percentage points from April’s rate of 2.1%. Seasonally adjusted estimates placed the number of employed residents at 749,300, a decrease of 220 from the previous month. In a statement, Governor Chris Sununu said the numbers show the state’s economy is strong heading into summer and he touted it as yet another sign of the Granite State’s success.

The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is asking boaters and anglers to enjoy loons from a safe distance this summer. Wildlife Biologist Rosalind Renfrew, says many areas where loons nest on Vermont’s lakes are surrounded by signs reminding people to give loons the space they need, but not all nesting areas are marked Renfrew also reminds people to avoid using lead fishing tackle.   Lead sinkers weighing one-half ounce or less are prohibited in Vermont.
