WTSA News For Your Thursday, June 1st:

Vermont’s department of health has issued an advisory about this week’s heat wave. The department says the predicted conditions create a serious risk for heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke, and state officials want people to know how to stay safe and healthy when the thermometer climbs. State climate and health program manager Jared Ulmer, says It’s important to ease into outdoor activities, to drink plenty of water and to take frequent breaks in the shade or cool indoor locations, especially during these first hot days of the season.

The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation is forecasting moderate concentrations of fine particle air pollution from smoke to affect the state through Friday. The particle pollution is the result of wildfire smoke from Nova Scotia, Canada. Wildfire smoke can cause a hazy or milky appearance in the sky and may be noticeable by smell at times. Although air quality is expected to remain acceptable and not exceed the federal health standard, DEC advises individuals who are unusually sensitive to air pollution (including children, older adults, and anyone with heart or lung disease such as asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis), or anyone especially sensitive to smoke, to take precautions to protect their health by limiting prolonged outdoor exposure and exertion and to monitor their symptoms.

The Green Mountain Care Board voted unanimously to uphold the two-year 8.6% net patient revenue target for Vermont hospitals. The vote was in response to a letter from the Vermont Association of Hospitals and Health Systems , requesting that GMCB either increase the target or waive enforcement of the target for Vermont hospitals for the second year. The care board received nearly 100 public comments from hospitals, non-hospital providers, small businesses, and individuals across the state. The comments highlighted concerns about how hospital budget increases would impact Vermonters’ ability to pay for rising health care premiums.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders will vote no on the compromise debt limit bill that would avert a default. Sanders says the final compromise is not as bad as it could be, but he cannot vote for a bill that takes vital nutrition assistance away from women, infants, children, and seniors, while refusing to ask billionaires who have never had it so good to pay a penny more in taxes. Sanders is also upset that the bill that makes it harder for working families to afford the outrageously high price of childcare, housing, and health care while making it easier for the wealthiest people and most profitable corporations in America to cheat on their taxes.

Vermont Governor Phil Scott’s veto pen has struck again. This time, the Governor has vetoed a proposal to increase legislative pay. According to Scott, the General Assembly passed several pieces of legislation that will significantly increase costs for Vermonters through new and higher taxes, fees, and penalties. He says it does not seem fair for legislators to insulate themselves from the very costs they are imposing on their constituents by doubling their own future pay.

Vermont wildlife officials are making their annual plea to farmers and landowners to extend No Mow May for the entire summer to protect threatened bird species. Vermont Fish & Wildlife officials say bird species like bobolinks, Savannah sparrows, and meadowlarks have suffered population declines due to loss of grassland habitat. They say avoiding or modifying mowing patterns to leave major fields and meadows untouched through the beginning of August can make all the difference in helping the nesting birds.
