WTSA News For Your Tuesday, September 27th:

A Brattleboro Police officer and two Vermont State Police sergeants will not be prosecuted for a deadly officer-involved shooting that happened in Brattleboro. The Vermont Attorney General’s Office and the Orange County State’s Attorney’s Office on Monday announced the end of their reviews of the July 19 incident. Both offices concluded Brattleboro Police Ofc. Ryder Carbone and VSP Det. Sgts. Jesse Robson and Samuel Truex had no choice but to use deadly force to prevent death or serious injury to Robson and Truex. Therefore, they say the shooting was objectively reasonable and justified. Police began searching for Matthew Davis on July 18 after his ex-girlfriend, Mary Anderson, went missing. Her body was found the next day. The fatal confrontation between the police and Davis came later that night when Davis charged at officers with a knife.

Fire destroyed a Westminster residence Monday morning. Crews were called to a home on Deer run. While responding, companies could see a heavy column of smoke from a distance. Westminster Engine 3 was first to arrive with heavy fire showing and made quick work to knock the bulk of the fire down.

Engine 1 and Utility 1 secured a water supply from a dry hydrant on Pond Road. Remaining companies arrived and assisted with additional fire attack, and Tankers 1 & 2 delivered over 18,000 gallons of water in addition to what apparatus brought initially. Golden Cross staged on scene and thankfully was not needed, as there were no injuries.

The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services is updating and expanding monkeypox vaccine eligibility criteria to make it easier for people at risk for monkeypox to be vaccinated, and to make it easier for healthcare providers to vaccinate patients they believe are at risk. Those recommended to get the 2-dose vaccine series include: Any person who identifies as gay, bisexual, queer, or is a man who has sex with men (MSM) and believes they are at risk for monkeypox virus infection. A person of any gender or sexual orientation whom a medical provider thinks is at increased risk for monkeypox virus infection. Persons who report in the prior 14 days a known exposure to the monkeypox virus.

Vermont Governor Phil Scott applauded Canada’s decision to remove all vaccination, ArriveCan, and random COVID-19 testing requirements for border crossings, effective September 30th. Scott says there is a lot of interest in Vermont as a place to vacation and do business – and this step will also make tourism and businesses travel easier, benefitting Vermont’s economy. The Governor hopes the United States federal government will soon lift vaccine mandates on the U.S. side of the border, removing the final hurdle to finally returning to pre-pandemic border crossing levels.

U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire is co-sponsoring new legislation today that would ensure the U.S. has sufficient critical munition stocks to support allies and partners in a crisis without depleting U.S. military stocks. The Promoting Readiness for Overseas Contingencies and Unexpected Responses to Exigencies Act would establish a Critical Munitions Acquisition Fund to allow the Secretary of Defense to better manage industry production lines and sustain particular munitions lines that are critical to U.S. national security interests. Additionally, the authorities granted in the CMAF would help the Department of Defense better anticipate industry’s supply chain needs and improve the Department’s purchasing power, driving down costs for the government.
