Police are investigating a suspicious death in Springfield. Early Monday afternoon, Springfield Police got a report from a person who said they found a man’s body on the side of Greeley Road. That portion of the road was closed so police can investigate. Vermont State Police say the investigation is still in its early stages. The body is being taken to the medical examiner’s office in Burlington to determine the cause and manner of death. The man’s identity is being withheld until his family can be notified. Anyone with information that could help is asked to call the state police in Westminster at 802-722-4600.
A man will be in court next month after police say he assaulted three health care workers with bodily fluids. Kyle Hamilton, 22, was reportedly at Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend on May 13. Police say while there, he assaulted three health care workers. He’s also accused of violating court conditions including not being charged with a new offense and not living at home.
Brattleboro select board members tonight will be asked to enforce a three percent cost of living raise for all non-union town employees. The board tonight is also being asked to approve contracts for a pair of town parking lot upgrades, and they’ll hear the initial proposed parking and utilities budgets for next year. The Windham Solid Waste Management District has re-opened its household hazardous waste depot. The drop off first opened in May 2021 and in the 6 months it was open last year it served 326 households from 16 district towns. In the past, handling and disposal of HHW at special, one-day collection events was costing WSWMD as much as $200 per vehicle served. Last year the average cost per vehicle served was about $70. The HHW Depot is proving to be a more cost-effective service to residents, schools, and small businesses, while providing the convenience of being open every week.
Governor Phil Scott and the Vermont Legislature have committed $5.2 million dollars to the working lands grant program this fiscal year, facilitating grants to 59 Vermont businesses. This marks the most significant investment in the 10 years of the program, with a total investment of over 12 million since 2012.On top of this year’s record investment, the legislature increased the future base funding for the program from an annual $500K level to $1 million dollars. The made in Vermont working lands businesses have the potential to bring business and job growth to Vermont working lands communities for the foreseeable future.
Cathy Eakins of Peoples United bank received the Tom Yahn Award at Windham & Windsor Housing Trust’s 34th Annual Celebration at the Waypoint Center in Bellows Falls. The award is given out annually, in honor of former WWHT board member Tom Yahn, to a Brattleboro community member who demonstrates a long-term commitment to the preservation and development of affordable housing and/or to the lives of those who live in affordable housing. This was the first award since Tom’s tragic passing felt across the community in early 2021.
The New Department of Health and Human Services has received approval from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to amend how the state deals with Substance Use Disorder Treatment and Recovery. The approved amendment will increase access to treatment for Medicaid beneficiaries with a serious mental illness and help reduce the number of people waiting in hospital emergency departments for a mental health bed. The amended waiver will allow the New Hampshire Medicaid Program to pay for short-term stays in Institutions for Mental Diseases provided to Medicaid enrollees between ages 21-64 with SMI and approved for full Medicaid benefits.
