The Vermont Health department Friday reported three deaths and 882 new covid 19 cases. There were 10 new positive covid tests in Windham county.. There were 12 deaths and 2,004 new covid 19 cases reported in New Hampshire, with 180 new positive covid tests in Cheshire county. In Massachusetts, 65 deaths and 7,181 new covid 19 cases. There were 103 new covid positive tests reported in Franklin county.
Due to the snowstorm predicted to hit the Brattleboro area , Brattleboro Memorial Hospital has canceled all testing and vaccine appointments.
Amtrak has canceled passenger rail service on The Vermonter today due to the impending storm. All New Haven-Springfield-Greenfield Service (Amtrak Hartford Line, Valley Flyer, Northeast Regional) is canceled.
Amtrak expects that the Vermonter will operate on Sunday, although Sunday morning may bring additional cancellations depending on conditions. The Vermont agency of transportation says big rigs will be subject to a chain up rule between Wilmington and Bennington. No other restrictions are currently in place. The storm is likely to be more severe in New Hampshire. Emergency management staff say the duration of the storm will make travel difficult. Department of Transportation Commissioner Victoria Sheehan urges motorists to delay travel and stay off the roads during the storm.
The Vermont House of Representatives passed legislation Friday designed to keep firearms out of hospitals and give law enforcement up to 30 days to extend the maximum background check waiting period for people seeking to buy firearms.\n a statement, Democratic House Speaker Jill Krowinski said the bill takes a “much-needed step” in closing a federal loophole and ensure that law enforcement agencies would have time to conduct a background check before someone can purchase a firearm. The Vermont bill, first passed by the Senate last year, also clarifies that a judge has the authority to order a defendant to relinquish their firearms while an emergency relief from abuse order is in effect.
–Vermont’s Department of Public Safety and the State Police Advisory Commission have released the third semiannual detailed summary of internal investigations involving members of the Vermont State Police. From January 1 , to June 30, of last year, the report shows that of the 11 cases, seven came to the attention of supervisors due to internal reporting by members of the state police, and four matters arose as the result of concerns raised by community members. Three of the complaints were determined to have represented no violation of VSP policy by the member in question. Four cases resulted in findings that the members did violate policy. In three additional cases, the trooper involved either resigned or retired before the internal investigation review process concluded. The internal investigation into the final case is on hold pending the outcome of related criminal proceedings.
