22 new Covid 19 cases were reported by the Vermont Health Department Sunday, and Windham county did not have any new positive tests. In New Hampshire, there were 79 new covid cases including 12 in Cheshire County. In Massachusetts, there were 5 deaths and 405 new covid 19 cases, including 1 in Franklin County.
A Brattleboro man is being held without bail on charges of sexual assault and kidnapping. 34-year old Christopher Pond will be arranged today. On Saturday, Police took a report of a sexual assault that occurred at a residence on High Street. Police interviewed the victim and executed a search warrant at the residence. Pond was arrested and ordered held until arraignment.
Vernon held it’s annual town meeting outside Sunday, passing the 1.96 million dollar town budget and a 91 thousand dollar library budget without discussion. Three human service items, totalling 72 hundred dollars, were defeated. A 20 thousand dollar farmland preservation article was reduced to 9 thousand dollars.
Vermont state police say a Bellows Falls man faces drug charges after a weekend incident. Police responded to a motor vehicle with an unresponsive operator on Missing Link Road in the town of Rockingham. Upon further investigation, Troopers located 9 bags of fentanyl and determined the operator, 35 year old Joshua Lescord, was impaired. He was subsequently arrested for Suspicion of Driving Under the Influence, Trafficking Fentanyl, and Violation of Conditions of Release. A July 6 court date has been scheduled.
Memorial Day in Brattleboro will be observed on Monday May 31. Brattleboro American Legion Post #5 will hold traditional services starting at 9:15 am at the Gilbert memorial on Main St next to the Coop and then moving on to Prospect Hill cemetery, St Michaels Cemetery, Veterans Memorial Bridge on Putney Rd. and Locust Ridge Cemetery. Following these there will be a ceremony on the Brattleboro Common at approximately 11:00 am. The ceremony will include guest speaker Tom Costello (a Vietnam war Marine Veteran) and include speakers from VFW Post 1034, Brattleboro American Legion Post #5 as well as selections played by the Brattleboro American Legion Band. Included in the ceremony on the common will be a presentation of a Purple Heart to the Historical Society by the family of Dorr Sprague who died in action in Guadalcanal in 1941/42.
Vermont lawmakers and state leaders are mulling over permanently adopting measures to stream committee hearings online. Through the pandemic, legislators have been meeting remotely over zoom which is broadcast online. Some say the virtual format has hampered complex policy discussions and has restricted access. But others say streaming them live has actually increased transparency and the ability for more Vermonters to keep tabs on the issues. Democratic lieutenant governor molly gray who presided over the senate virtually, says zoom and streaming capabilities should be used in some way going forward.

Locally, as heard on The Beast on Saturday, in Boys High School Baseball action, Brattleboro beat Otter Valley, 5-2. In Girls Softball, Brattleboro beat Otter Valley, 18-5. Also in Girls Softball action, Leland & Gray beat Twin Valley 20-10. Leland & Gray hosts Green Mountain on Tuesday, first pitch is at 4:30.
Tuuka Rask was solid in net as the Bruins defeated Washington 3-1 last night to win their series against the Capitals, 4 games to1 as the Bruins move on to the 2nd round of the play offs.
The Yankees continue their winning ways by beating the White Sox 5-4 yesterday, the Red Sox lost to the Phillies, 6-2.
