WTSA News for Thursday, May 2nd:
An area elder care facility will seek state approval for a first of it’s kind facility in Vermont. Vernon Homes will seek approval from the Green Mountain Care Board to build six Green House style units, replacing the traditional model of nursing home care. If approved, the units would offer private bedrooms and bathrooms together with common dining and living areas that promote socializing and a family environment. The concept has spread nationwide, since it was first developed in 2003.A community meeting to outline the plan was held Tuesday.

A group of area residents plan to stage a Silent Vigil & Meditation on the Whetstone Path at the Brattleboro Food Co-op on May 9, between 4:00-5:00 PM to protest the Vermont Air Guard’s basing of F-35 jets at Burlington’s International Airport next year. Activists claim the local action is in solidarity with a state action on 9 May in Montpelier that will include a 24-Hour Meditation Protest for Peace, culminating with a one-hour meditation for all to join from 2-3:00 pm on the Statehouse lawn. Activists claim the jets are designed to carry a nuclear payload, thus making it an offensive, not a defensive weapon.
Lucky babies born May 29 in Vermont will receive $100 deposited into a Vermont 529 college savings account opened by the Vermont Student Assistance Corp. Plus, one lucky Vermonter – baby or not – will be chosen to receive $529 in a college savings account in an online month-long drawing. The Vermont Association of Hospitals and Health Systems is joining VSAC, which administers Vermont’s 529 college savings plan, to help educate Vermont families about saving for college for their children. A 529 plan is an education savings plan operated by a state or educational institution designed to help families set aside funds for future college costs.
New Hampshire’s Fish and Wildlife Department is asking motorists to break for moose. There were 105 collisions between moose and vehicles in New Hampshire in 2018; in the last five years the state has averaged 133 collisions per year. While moose are active throughout the year, May through October are high-risk months for collisions because moose venture onto roadways to eat the remaining salt residue from winter surface treatments.
