The Brattleboro Police Department seeks public assistance in identifying a suspect involved in an attempted robbery at Dollar General on Marlboro Road last Friday at 10 a.m. An employee reported that a man dressed in black, wearing a mask and ski goggles, engaged in a brief altercation with staff before fleeing toward Western Avenue. One employee sustained a minor injury but did not require medical attention. Investigators have yet to identify the suspect and are urging residents near Western Avenue to review their surveillance footage. Governor Phil Scott is calling on lawmakers to alleviate tax burdens on Vermonters this session. He reiterated his proposals to lower the Social Security tax, expand the child tax credit, and exempt military pensions and survivor benefits from taxation. Scott believes these measures could attract retirees to Vermont. Currently, Vermont is one of only five states that do not offer a military tax exemption. There is no set timeline for the bill’s return to the House for a vote.
Congressman Chris Pappas of New Hampshire declared his candidacy on Thursday to replace retiring U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen, a fellow Democrat. At 44, Pappas is seen as the leading Democratic contender for the position. Shaheen, who turned 78 in January and is the first woman to serve as both governor and senator in the U.S., announced in March that she would not run for reelection.
A 32-year-old man from Brookline, Daniel Omand, was arrested on February 14 for allegedly filming a sexual encounter and sharing it without consent, as reported by Vermont State Police. He was taken into custody around 2:18 p.m. following a complaint. Investigators found that the offense occurred in the presence of a child, and Omand is also accused of placing a suspected tracking device in the victim’s vehicle. He faces charges including voyeurism, non-consensual disclosure of explicit images, committing an offense in the presence of a child, and stalking. Omand appeared in Vermont Superior Court and is currently held without bail at Southern State Correctional Facility due to a probation violation. The victim’s identity remains confidential per state policy.
Drivers in the Upper Valley should be aware of a traffic alert. Exit 10A on northbound Interstate 91, leading to southbound Interstate 89, will remain closed until next Tuesday at 6 p.m. Additionally, Exit 20 on southbound I-89 to Route 12A will close at 6 a.m. Monday and reopen at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Expect delays around Exit 19, where I-89 southbound connects to I-91 southbound in Lebanon, attributed to weather conditions.
Safety issues at two intersections on Route 9 in Keene were discussed by the City Council’s Municipal Services, Facilities, and Infrastructure Committee on Wednesday. A short-term solution for one crossing is expected within the next month, while committee members plan to consult the N.H. Department of Transportation regarding the other. City Engineer Bryan Ruoff indicated that improvements at the Route 9 and Sullivan Road intersection could be completed by NHDOT crews in four to six weeks.
Vermont’s swift-water rescue teams are deploying to assist after severe storms and tornadoes impacted the South and Midwest. Task Force 1, Vermont’s urban search and rescue team, received a request for aid in Kentucky around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, following significant tornado damage. With forecasts predicting 10-15 inches of rain and flooding, the 18-member team, accompanied by a K-9, departed at 8 a.m. Thursday and is set to remain for two weeks.
