Green Mountain Power is working to restore service for the thousands who lost it in Friday afternoon and evening’s thunderstorms. The Brattleboro fire department says downed trees affected power along Western Avenue and Maple Street, plus a substation on the southern side of town was shut down. The Putney Fire Department said a substation serving their town had lost power, affecting the entire community for several hours. Early this morning, service in 14 Windham County Towns was still affected. The outage also forced the postponement of last night’s Brattleboro Bears football game, which was rescheduled for tonight at 6 P M.
A Massachusetts resident was killed by a fallen tree while he and his fiancé were camping in Somerset early Friday . 33 year old Joshua Przybycien of Palmer, Mass was pronounced dead at the scene .
Vermont state police say the death is not considered suspicious and there is no cause for public concern. The investigation is ongoing.
Brattleboro’s Oak Grove school, plus Twin Valley middle and high school are on the Vermont Education Agency’s new list of schools that are eligible to receive advanced technical assistance and financial support, under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act . These schools will receive additional Comprehensive Supports to address their continuous improvement needs. Comprehensive Supports include additional funding to help close achievement gaps, paired with consultation and assistance from the Agency’s Education Quality Division.
The Vermont Nuclear Decommissioning Citizens Advisory Panel will hold its second regular meeting of 2023 on , September 18, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. At the meeting, NorthStar and Vermont State Agencies will provide updates of recent Vermont Yankee decommissioning activities. Recent activities of the Panel’s Federal Nuclear Waste Policy Committee will also be discussed. Additionally, the Panel will discuss several Panel administrative issues, including a potential change in Panel leadership, potential budgetary expenditures for the current fiscal year and potential in-depth discussion topics for future Panel meetings.
The U S Department of Health and Human Services has announced a change in the department’s contract with Regeneron to guarantee that the company’s COVID-19 treatment must be reasonably priced. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders says the announcement is a positive step in the right direction, saying the Administration must include strong reasonable pricing requirements for all prescription drugs sold in America that were developed at taxpayer expense. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont says the federal office on Violence Against Women awarded $1,350,000 to organizations that provide legal services and improve the effective coordination of justice systems impacting survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking. $750,000 for Legal Assistance for Victims Program went to the Vermont Network Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Inc. $600,000 under the Justice for Families Program went to the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity, .
The Vermont Department of Labor has begun issuing Disaster Unemployment Assistance payments to eligible individuals . As of Thursday,128 applications had been filed, and payments were being processed for individuals who had submitted the required program documentation and certified with the Department that their employment had been impacted due to the July flooding, as required by federal regulation. The Department is currently contacting claimants by phone to process weekly claims, and claimants are being urged to provide necessary documentation and return phone messages as quickly as possible to expedite benefit payments.
