Amtrak has canceled Ethan Allen Express and Vermonter services in Vermont for today due to the potential of trees falling onto tracks from high winds. Both trains will come into Vermont today but not run tomorrow. Weather permitting, both trains will run Saturday .”
The Christmas holiday weekend starts today. Brattleboro town offices, except for emergency services, will close at noon and remain closed through Monday. The Brooks Memorial Library will be closed on Saturday and Monday. Trash recycling and compost pick up will remain on it’s regular Monday thru Thursday schedule.
Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy Thursday cast his final vote in the Senate, and it was on a bill he led in writing: the Fiscal Year 2023 Omnibus Appropriations Bill that funds the federal government. Leahy has now cast 17,374 votes, the second-highest vote total in Senate history. The final step will be as Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Leahy, as President Pro Tem of the Senate, sign the bill, so it can be sent to the President’s desk to be signed into law.
The bill contains more than $212 million in Congressionally Directed Spending included by Leahy, for 38 projects across Vermont. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has earmarked 38 million, including for an expansion of the federal qualified health center program into Brattleboro, plus additional money for the Vermont E M S academy.
A federal jury in New Hampshire has convicted 42 year old Ian Freeman, of Keene, on four counts of money laundering, conspiracy to launder money, operation of an unlicensed money transmitting business, and tax evasion
According to trial exhibits and witness testimony during the ten-day trial, Freeman laundered over ten million dollars in proceeds of romance scams and other internet frauds by exchanging U.S. dollars for bitcoin. Freeman is scheduled to be sentenced on April 14,
There will be a free Christmas breakfast in Brattleboro. Jadi Flynn and Megan Walker will host the 40th annual Charlie Slate memorial breakfast in honor of their grandfather and great grandfather. The breakfast will be held at the American legion hall on linden street between 8 and 11 am.
