We’re going to experience dangerously hot temperatures this weekend. The Town of Brattleboro urges everyone to drink plenty of water, wear light clothing and stay out of the heat as much as possible during the current heat wave.

People who need some cool air can visit the Brooks Memorial Library (224 Main Street) and the Central Fire Station (103 Elliot Stree).

The New Hampshire Department of Public Safety advises residents in  Cheshire county to 

           Never leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles.      

    Drink plenty of water, even if you do not feel thirsty.

  Check on family, friends, and neighbors who do not have air conditioning and who spend much of their time alone.

   Check on your animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat.

    Go to a designated public shelter if your home loses power during periods of extreme heat. Stay on the lowest floor out of the sunshine if air conditioning is not available.

 Less than six months into the job, Town Manager Yoshi Manale submitted his resignation on Friday, saying he is not the right fit for the position. His last day will be June 3. Manale in a prepared statement said In a small town like Brattleboro, he quickly discovered that the prominence of the job creates drawbacks for him to fulfill the duties of the job most efficiently. 

In a prepared statement , Selectboard Chair Ian Goodnow accepted the resignation with regret, saying  “ Yoshi would prefer to return to work in larger municipalities and we wish him the best with his future endeavors.” Assistant Town Manager Patrick Moreland has agreed to serve as Interim Town Manager until the Board is able to conduct a search and fill the position.

A Berlin New Hampshire resident has been  identified as the man been arrested on charges related to a Beattleboro bank robbery. Just after. 3 p m Thursday, Police responded to People’s United Bank on Main Street for a reported bank robbery.  A description of the suspect was given as a white male in his mid-40s, with brown or black hair, a beard, balding, wearing a red shirt, shorts, swollen legs and wearing a blue surgical mask.  He left on foot heading west on Elliot Street.
About 25 minutes after the initial call was made, a witness notified police that the suspect, later identified as 35 year old Nicholas Rheaume,of Berlin, NH, was seen walking out of the Brattleboro Food Co-Op parking lot toward Main Street.  Rheaume was located by Hinsdale Police walking over the bridges into New Hampshire.
Rheaume also had a warrant in New Hampshire.  He was arrested by Hinsdale PD and held at Cheshire County Correctional Facility.  The extradition process will be started in Vermont for Rheaume to return to answer for the charges related to this incident.

 

 A House fire in Keene remains under investigation ./ Crews were dispatched to 193 Elm Street just before 4 AM Thursday, for a reported explosion with fire. Units found the blaze on a porch had extended into the first and second floors, and caused extensive damage. Three adults and 5 children are being assisted by the Red Cross.\

More good news for the Vermont economy. According to household data, the seasonally-adjusted statewide unemployment  rate for April was 2.5 percent. This reflects a decrease of one-tenth of one percentage point from the  prior month’s revised estimate. State Labor Commissioner Michael Harringtoin says for every three open jobs in Vermont, there is one person categorized as ‘unemployed’. Whether you are a business or a jobseeker, working with the Vermont Department of Labor can  expediate positive labor market outcomes.

Vermont education secretary Dan French says along with higher achievement, supporting the social emotional and well-being needs of both educators and students must be a priority. French says the agency will  work with the Vermont Agency of Human Services to coordinate mental health and wellness supports. Grants will be offered to   assist Supervisory Unions and their community partners in implementing activities such as universal social-emotional screening, expanded school mental health services, and professional development on youth mental health and suicide prevention.
