Vermont Governor Phil Scott is pledging to do more for the smaller communities around the state. In his inaugural address Thursday, Scott called for workers and families from Newport to Newfane to have equal access to education, childcare, afterschool programs, quality healthcare, good jobs, and decent affordable housing. Scott says his Budget Adjustment, to be introduced today, includes funding to help level the playing field for underserved regions. The Governor says he disagrees with parts of the Democratic approach to climate change, but he does back additional weatherization, and additional access to electric vehicles with fast chargers

Gas prices in Vermont were up three cents in the past week, averaging $3.39 per gallon today. Gas Buddy says prices are down 33 cents for the month and are 4 cents higher than they were one year ago. Nationally, prices are up 14 cents/g for the week. They are now at $3.27, down 8 cents from last month and 3 cents lower than last year.

Three Windham County lawmakers have been assigned to house committee leadership positions. Brattleboro’s Emilie Kornheiser is the new chair of the tax writing house Ways and Means committee. Guilford’s Sara Coffey will chair the Transportation Committee. Dover Independent Laura Sibilia is the vice chair of the newly formed Environment and Energy committee.

A new committee assignment for Vermont U S Senator Bernie Sanders. The independent says he will be the new chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. This committee has broad jurisdiction over many of the important issues facing our country. Sanders says he intends to use the gavel to protect the needs of working families, the elderly, the children, the sick, and the poor. 

There’s been an uptick in covid 19 cases in New Hampshire. 13 new deaths were reported during the past week. There were 1,683 new positive COVID-19 test results between Thursday, December 29 and Wednesday, January 4. and 56 are being treated in the hospital.

The Vermont Community Broadband Board is asking Vermont’s employers, universities, colleges, hospitals, and other institutions to help spread the word to their employees, students, patients, and networks about the importance of challenging the FCC National Broadband Map. Getting as many people as possible to check their addresses and challenge incorrect information could mean tens of millions of additional federal dollars to get all Vermonters connected to broadband. The Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment Program provides each state will receive a minimum of $100 million to fund the construction of high-speed internet access. An additional $37.1 billion is then distributed to states based on the total number of unserved locations.

Trent Frederic had two goals to lead the Bruins past the Kings in L.A. last night, 5-2. Boston is at San Jose Saturday night, puck drops at 10:30.

Local scores from last night, Brattleboro lost to Windsor in Girls Basketball 60-25. Leland & Grey beat Bellows Falls in Girls Basketball 54-42, and in Boys Basketball action, Brattleboro beat Mt St. Joseph 49-37.
