WTSA News For Your Wednesday, May 11th:

28-year-old Nathan Carman, of Vernon, was arrested Tuesday on an eight-count indictment charging him with the 2016 murder of his mother, Linda Carman, on the high seas, and related frauds to obtain family and insurance funds. Carman will be arraigned in U S District court today. According to the unsealed indictment, in 2013, Nathan Carman shot and killed his grandfather John Chakalos at Chakalos’s home in Windsor, Connecticut, and, in 2016, killed his mother Linda Carman and sunk his boat during a supposed fishing trip off the coast of Rhode Island. The indictment alleges that both killings were part of a scheme to obtain money and property from the estate of John Chakalos and related family trusts. If convicted of murder on the high seas, Carman faces mandatory life imprisonment.

Dry conditions, and an accidental spark from an outdoor wood furnace were responsible for a fire at a Vernon residence Monday night. Fire Chief Alex Dunklee says the fire caused substantial damage to the Tim Smith residence on Meadow Road, and also burned an acre of surrounding woods. Dunklee says the Red Cross is assisting the family, as the occupants were displaced. A fund is being established to help the family get back on it’s feet. Two cats owned by the family died in the fire, but there were no other injuries. Several area fire departments provided assistance at the scene.

Vermont’s latest COVID wave continues to build, and Vermont health officials say a new sub-variant of the virus is gaining a foothold.  Health Commissioner Dr. Mark Levine says the BA.2.12.1 variant now makes up 30% of cases in New England and up to 60% in upstate New York. He says its virulence is still being studied but that those who are vaccinated continue to avoid the most serious outcomes. Levine says a large number of those who do end up in the hospital failed to get a least one of the booster vaccinations.

The Vermont Agency of Education will provide to 10,900 Vermont State Park passes to Vermont educators through its new Summer Recess Park Pass program. The passes are available on a first come, first served basis to those who, as of June 1, 2022, are employees of a Vermont supervisory union/school district or independent school serving grades Kindergarten through 12. Brattleboro has contracted with LaRock & Son Inc to replace the sidewalk on the west side of South Main Street between Cotton Mill Hill and Pine Street.  This project will be ongoing for several weeks and at times, operations will require one lane, alternating traffic as well as no parking in the area.  Residents are asked to be aware of no parking signs in the area and drivers should be prepared for alternate traffic patterns during this work.

Vermont congressman Peter Welch is applauding word that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services  has finalized new policies to provide more affordable access to prescription drugs for the 53 million Americans enrolled in Medicare Part D plans. Welch has championed these  policy reforms to create cost-savings for Medicare enrollees. These changes will also create savings for local community pharmacies, which provide essential services in rural communities.

The policy requires that Medicare Part D plans pass along price concessions received from pharmacies at the point of sale.
