The hospitalization rate in Vermont has reached the point the governor said would cause significant strain on the system. One month ago, it was projected hospitalizations could hit 80 if the trend continued. As of Sunday, 81 people were admitted. There was also another new record number of cases in a single day, with 643 new cases were reported Sunday. The record case count comes two days after Vermont reported the previous single-day record of 604 on Friday. Patients are being moved around and some beds are being added to handle COVID patients.

Vermont Lieutenant Governor Molly Gray announced Monday that she would seek the Democratic Party nomination to fill the U.S. House seat that will become vacant when Congressman Peter Welch runs for the U.S. Senate. Gray, 37, a Burlington lawyer who was born and raised on a farm in South Newbury, is seeking Vermont’s first open seat in the U.S. House since 2006 when now U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders left the House to run for the upper chamber. Vermont has only sent white men to Washington, making it the only state not to have been represented by a woman or a person of color.

Vermont Secretary of Human Services Mike Smith will retire at the end of the year, after his second stint leading the State’s largest agency. In addition to its role in the pandemic response, the Agency of Human Services oversees six state departments, twelve district offices, and a network of community partners and providers. Deputy Human Services Secretary Jenney Samuelson, who has played an integral role in the state’s COVID-19 response, including helping lead Vermont’s nation-leading vaccination efforts, will serve as interim secretary following Secretary Smith’s departure.

Well-documented Natural gas pipeline constraints, coupled with global supply chain issues related to deliveries of oil and liquefied natural gas, are placing New England’s power system at heightened risk heading into the winter season.  ISO New England operator of the region’s power grid expects to have the resources needed to meet consumer demand if the winter is mild, but a severe prolonged cold snap could necessitate emergency actions if power-producing resources lack access to the fuel they need to operate.  Higher and volatile fuel costs typically leads to higher and volatile wholesale electricity prices. The extent of any increase is hard to predict and will depend on a number of factors including consumer demand, weather, and the responsiveness of the fuel supply chain.
